Update on Jack Garman May 7, 2010

Postby Margo » Fri May 07, 2010 2:04 pm

The past few days have been some of the toughest but at the same time, the bottom line has been the best. Jack was admitted to M.D. Anderson’s hospital on Sunday with a high-grade fever and zero immunity. The next few days were some of the most miserable ones you could ever imagine.; we both averaged 1-2 hours of sleep in any 24-hour period. Jack suffered from a terrible virus and I suffered from bone-deadening exhaustion. Today (Friday), after receiving10 units of blood/platelets and a continuous IV with an assortment of antibiotics, Jack is on the mend. The hallucinations are mostly gone, the fever is gone, white blood cells have miraculously begun to appear, and though he has stubbed his toe a dozen times this week, he has successfully managed to avoid any of the worser maladies one encounters when crossing a minefield. He still has many challenges ahead: the drugs they have had to give him this week have caused enormous fluid retention – he has difficulty lifting his legs. He still has a terrible cough (but the white blood cells will begin to knock that down) and needs oxygen. He is immune-compromised and always will be, to some extent. And we know that while the stem cell transplant only temporarily arrests the cancer, Jack is now in remission. We are realistic about his disease; when the time comes, there are other treatment options set aside for the future. Praise God – life is good!

The oncologist hopes to release Jack on Monday. The first order of business will be for him to work on regaining his strength. He still needs to keep on growing new, cancer-free white blood cells. He needs to understand and begin to live within new limits. He cannot be around people with colds or other illnesses; he cannot be in crowds; he cannot eat fresh fruits/veggies; he cannot do yard work; he cannot be in the sun without protective wear; and he must continue to be tested in the future. All of those limits are very manageable! We will post another update soon, but in the meantime, suffice it to say that every single day we give thanks to God and to each of you who have helped Jack on this journey. Praise God – life is good; your friendship and love continue to sustain us.

Love,

Jack and Sue

Whew, it's about time to have some relief! I hope and pray that Jack continues to mend, gets much needed rest and regains his strength. Sue, please get some rest and allow your mind to be a little more at ease. All the emotional strain you have been through can be so taxing, take care of yourself! Big hugs to you both! :) :) :)

What wonderful news!!!!! This is truely the greatest Mother's Day gift one could ever wish for. Sue, may you have a great Mother's Day. May you be showered with hugs, laughter, and love on this Mother's Day. Celebrate life's goodness with your family and cherish every moment. Your journey has rippled out to all of us, like a single drop of water in a pond. The ripples continue, out in a circle, on and on. We are with you and Jack. Every time you look at a ripple in the water, remember that we are here. Take care and God Bless!!!!!

I'm reminded how the Lord provided two helpers to keep Moses' arms up so His people would prevail in the battle. We're holding up your arms in prayer !

Whew. Breathing a small sigh of relief here that this part is nearly over as far as Jack being at his lowest!

Yippee for new white blood cells and their infection fighting ability!

Who wants to be out in the yard in Houston in the summer anyway? Not me. Today was about the nicest it's gonna be until late October I suspect!

Jack, you're gonna be quilting within the month! Or at least bouncing a g-kid on your lap. tee hee

Boy, the bonds of love a so strong. They live and care for each other. What a beautiful tribute to for better or worse.

My prayers are for all of you and send strength and rest for the continued battle to be fought.

Take care.

I hope Jack regains his strength back soon. Yes Jack take it easy and know all your limits I'm praying that you produce alot of white blood cells quickly so they can rid you of all the yucky ones. I know Sue is taking really good care of you. I'm so sorry for all hell cancer has put you thru. Our granddaughter Mia 7 is going thru iodine radiation/test again this week. You & Sue are in my thoughts & prayers.
