What about a BOM for Machine Embroidery??

I never started the 2009 BOM, but it is on my list of projects to do. I would like to do the 2010 BOM, but don't know if I will start on it in Jan. (I did sign up for a BOM at one of my LQS, which I have never done before, so it should be interesting to actually work on a BOM for the first time).
What I would really like to do, is an embroidered quilt, and would love to see a BOM using machine embroidery. Learning new techniques, or reviewing old techniques, or just different ways of doing things as it pertains to machine embroidery would be wonderful.

I have been looking for some designs to use, and while I have come up with some different ideas, I haven't had the courage to start, because I'm not quite sure what to do, and how to do some of the things needed to create larger blocks from embrodiery designs. And I don't have someone I can ask questions of, if I run into any problems.

I'm sure this wouldn't be an easy task to create a BOM, since there are so many different machines/software/designs etc that would need to be addressed in the lessons for a BOM, but it would be great if there were a way to do this.

For those of us who do not own embroidery machines, I certainly hope that a machine embroidered BOM is not offered in lieu of a technique that all of us could enjoy. It would be okay, if a redwork BOM is offered too, for those of us who would must embroider by hand.

I wasn't suggesting that a machine embroidered BOM be offered INSTEAD of the regualr BOMs. However, there are a lot of people that have machines capable of doing embroidery, and I thought it would be great if there were a BOM for those that have them, to help them to learn more about how to use their machines and software.

Not every BOM is going to be enjoyed by "all". Just like there will be some that won't do the applique, or won't do the pieced BOMs. Since there are over 50,000 memebers now, there is room for all techniques, but that doesn't mean that someone has to do them ALL. There is a big difference between hand embroidery and machine embroidery, and it would be difficult to create one BOM that would work for both.

Great idea! I am not going to do TQS' BOM next year as I am BOM'd out! I am going to join another Embroidery club at a LQS that will be doing Embroidablock by Hoopsisters.

Because of time, I am thinking how I can morph the pieced and applieque BOMs for 2010 together. It may be interesting to see if I can add embroidery to it as well.

What a great idea Diane! I'd certainly be interested in pushing the boundaries of the machine I have. Well not actually the machine, MY boundaries with the machine!!!!

I have no love of applique as such (as yet) and the pieced one, well it's beautiful but I have a pieced BOM starting soon, I think I would certainly join in an embroidery one, hand or machine, just to see it used in a quilt.

Maggie,

Do like I did for the 2009 BOM, save all the PDF files as they are released, that way, should you decide you want to do it later on, you will have the instructions to do it.

Since I did sign up for a BOM at one of my LQS, I don't know if I will start on the 2010 BOM here, but I do want to make it at some point, just need to see how things go this year, and how much time I have for quilting.

I too would like a machine embroidery BOM. It would give another dimension to our quilting techniques, not all of us are good at, or like applique.

Our LQS did that last year! I have the book, but couldn't do class do to another commitment. It is a gorgeous quilt!

I think it would be fun too. The joy of quilting is that there are so many techniques to choose from. I am doing a Christmas quilt (for 2010) totally in the hoop. I'm combining appliqued Santas, crazy patches that I am digitizing myself, and quilt design blocks. After that I am going to teach myself foundation paper piecing. Oops...getting off topic. I also would like to see an embroidered BOM. Who could do it?

Thinking out loud...we can digitize applique patterns. Smaller hoop machines would require multi-hooping to make each block big enough, probably. This is one of my goals...to learn how to do this, but I've taken a quilting class that used multi-hooping for big applique blocks so I know that SomeOne knows how to do this. (How about a miniature BOM?). I'm not sure how that scalloped border would work. This can be done with Bernina V5 & V6 software, so it may be able to be done with other brands of software. The technique is in the advanced applique lessons on the Bernina USA website and on exnovodesign.com under the Discover Artista lessons. I think there is also a small lesson in the Bernina lessons on this website where Nina McVeigh machine appliques some rectangles.

With the V6, any applique pattern or picture of an applique, that can be scanned can be digitized. It's a matter of getting an image into the software, then tracing each line with the various tools to turn them into stitches, making sure that what is "underneath" is stitched first.

Making the embroidery applique files is really addicting...like video games for quilters.

I hope this makes sense.
PS...I've found the upgrade to V6 worth every penny.

I am still waiting for V6 to be released here or maybe figure out a way for me to buy it in the USA and have it shipped here. I just have to figure out how to obtain an upgrade remotely

But I have an idea :idea:

for our own machine embroidered BOM. I am sort of getting good at at digitizing crazy patches, making appliques from artwork, etc. with V5, thanks to the wonderful tutorials mentioned in the previous post. Unfortunately I have no idea how to create designs for other machines

. Is it possible that we could create our own embroidery BOM? Am I nuts to even mention this :shock:

? Does somebody have Embird? I've taken courses from Joanne Winn at Quilt University and she uses Embird to create designs for multiple machines. As a matter of fact, she has a gorgeous Jacobean BOM for sale on her website.

Just a suggestion to create a little discussion.
