fabric paint

fabric paint

Postby lwiniger » Tue Apr 17, 2007 7:13 am

I'm making my shopping list for the AQS show in paducah ky next week. I want to get a fabric paint that can be used for enhancing shadows and just enriching the look of some areas. I know there are many types on the market. I'm thinking my preferred application would be a sponging or pen-like technique. I do want a soft texture, is that (one of) the differences between dye and paint?

any suggestions?

You might also want to consider ink. Tsukineko does collections of inks or individual colors. You use them by dipping these special Fantastix "pens" into them. The pens soak up ink, and then you can use them for a long time before you bother with "refilling" them. They give you a nice control of application. It's like filling your own fine-tip or brush-tip magic markers. I've seen them demo'd by vendors at shows, so maybe you'll get a chance to try them in Paducah.

They seem less messy and more controlled than dyes or paints, to me.

Also, for sahdowing you might try good ol' Crayons. Heat set crayoned areas (sandwiched between paper towel layers) between applying different colors to prevent blending -- or not. Very un-messy!

The Sewing With Nancy episodes on PBS here recently were the ones on landscape quilting. They showed all kinds of different things that she and Natalie use for hi lighting/shadowing etc the quilts. Many of the items they said come right from the kids art box or office supply store--pastels, crayons, markers etc.
