Man-Made Quilts

Man-Made Quilts

Postby Sherrym » Wed Jun 27, 2007 8:36 am

Hello all you antique quilt lovers! I am researching antique quilts made by men - say up to the 1950s? Do you have any family quilts made by men? What is the story behind it? Does your local museum have any quilts made by men? Send me your ideas on where to find antique quilts made by men!

Thanks a million,
Sherry

Sherry,
I just saw this today. Okay, I'm two months late however, I do have some information.

Back in the 1930's in Illinois there was a man who made 3 quilts using progressively smaller hexagons. Each quilts got larger as he went along. If I remember correctly he worked at the time as an explosives expert and quilted to relax. His wife & sister in law quilted the quilts for him. Having worked with marquetry at some point in his life, this is clearly reflected in his quilts.

These three quilts are on display at the Illinois State Museum - you might be able to see them on line. That's actually where I was when you originally posted this thread, sorry for the delay.

I read in a book about West Virginia antique quilts about a tailor from Wheeling WV who made a fabulous applique quilt as a way to woo a certain young woman. I know the book contained pictures of the quilt and the full story. It was turn of the century I believe. The story was part of a whole chapter about men who made quilts. It was more common around here because men would make quilts as a way to pass the time when mines were idled and miners were out of work.

I don't know about whole quilts made by men, but my man made a few blocks the other day just to try it out. He was actually having a lot of fun and trying out all the different stitches the sewing machine had to offer.

I would love to read your book when its finished, Sherrym. I am always on the lookout for man-made quilts but don't come across them all that often. I will be sure and let you know if I find any though. I would imagine they would be few an far between especially prior to the 1950s.

I would suggest contacting Quilter's Newsletter about past issues containing articles about men and their quilts. I can't remember the man's name, but he was a farmer and quilting was his hobby. He did alot of original work. Also, a couple of years ago at Road To California Quilt Show, there was a HUGE quilt made of very small squares showing the Last Supper. It was amazing--and made by a man. Judy in Torrance

Thanks Dana, I was honor (and surprised) to have my quilt posted in the daily blog. I have several others in the works..now I just need to get them finished. I have decided that I am not going to start any new projects until these are finished. Thats my new years resolution anyway..we will see :)
