Watch out Ricky !

Watch out Ricky !

"A new male quilter is on the rise"

Fransisco 10, Mariana 7, Jasmine 8,

I have three young spanish children living next door to me, and they come over almost every day, and they have been watching me sew for the last three years now. They have become apart of our family. Every now and again they would ask me; when are you going to teach us.

I have 6 sewing machines that I've collected from yard sales, and good will. I got one of my Singers out, went over the parts over and over till they could tell me what each part was and went over all safety measures, then we moved onto how to fill the bobbins. After we could do that we went onto How to put the bobbin in its case correctly. Then we moved on to how to thread the machine. Tell ya what they learnt this pretty fast,"very eager learners" the Girls wanted to play so they lost abit of interest.

"Not Fransisco", he has told everyone at school he has a new sewing machine, he got afew mixed feelings but over all the adults praised him, he is thrilled. Some of his friends said that was abit strange. I told him some of your best quilters are men. I showed him afew of Ricky Tims quilts. He thought that was just awesome. He says he will be that good soon with abit of practice, too Cute! Soon as he gets his home work done he comes running for lessons. First lesson was to learn to sew straight lines 1/4 lines and get use to a med speed comfort.

Today we cut squares out, he is going to make a twin size quilt. A Simple nine patch. We went over the ironing fabric and seams.1/4 inch seam allowance. He is going to learn how to make a completed quilt. He says; is it going to take about 2-3 weeks? I told him not to worry about the time it takes him but to enjoy the process of making it. Then he asked me what I liked most about sewing? I told him their are many things that I like about sewing, Its about creating something that I made on my own that brings warmth and beauty, happiness to me and to others.

He says Ill get to learn how to make alot of things like you make won't I ? yes, I told him that he would also be creating things on his very own too. I made the children pajama bottoms and this will be his next project, he will be thrilled to make his very own. He says; should I bring my sewing machine with me when I come over to work on my blanket I told him that would help me alot to help teach him. He's So Cute!

I will put up a photo of Frank and his progress soon. He is doing good.

That is great Katzzz... maybe 10 is the magical age, my son is now 10 but the bug bit him last year... take a look at TQS member Curiousgeorge. He even went w/ me last summer to the Super Seminar, he wants to BE Ricky when he grows up! LOL! But he's kind of stuck now for 2 reasons... he thinks he needs a Bernina like mine (uh, right) the Janome just isn't up to snuff, and he wanted to make a JACKET-- no, nothing easy, he's mid-way now on a wool sports coat! He's really tested my home-ec recollections, but it's ready for sleeves now. My hope is we'll get it finished before it's too hot for wool, b/c he'll probably outgrow it next year! Ah, another plus for quilts, you never outgrow them!

Thank you everyone :D

Fransisco is a keeper for sure, he is so excited about learning to sew. Yesterday he went straight home to start on his very first block, his father sat and watched him sew, mother was at work
they work different shifts. His mother had a go on it yesterday, sewing alittle, she has never sewed before either.

Parents are originally from Quatamalla (SP). They are actually our renters,we own two homes side by side. We have all become very close. We celebrate all the holidays with the children. They never celebrated any before they moved here, and their Birthdays too.

Our children have grown up, we have four granddaughters. They are close to the children too. When they get out of school it's a straight shot to our house, we eat many dinners together. They are the most thankful children I know. "Thank you,Thank you"
They give you compliments. Frank even picked up a recipe book from the library so him and I could look it over! LOL! Frank Loves to eat .
Yes we do have many wonderful memories to charish with Fransisco, Jasmine, Mariana. It will break all our hearts when they move one day, their going back to quatemalla when the children get older. You should see them making Christmas cookies. Licking the fingures as the icing going on!! Mom & Dad will Love those cookies! LOL. We have painted many ceramic Suns together, the ones like you get on resorts. I bought the molds to make them. I could go on and on about all the beautiful memories we will treasure. They are very special to us.

I think 10 is the magical age Florence. I'm happy to hear Curious George is also enjoying sewing. Tell him Janomes are great thats what I have, A Janome 9500 embroidery a nice machine,I Love mine. I have afew waiting in line to claim mine when I ever get a new one,LOL! Not any time soon.
It's funny how they want to start out with the harder projects. (Now be warned Florence), if Frank wants to make a sports Jacket he's comming to your house for lessons thats beyond my teaching skills. Make sure dinner is on the table too,Though he's going to be so excited that he will eat fast hoping you'll get to the lessons sooner!

The pajama pants I made for the children, they have out grew them but You have to "vision" Fransisco comming over to the house in his Pajamma bottoms,"He's the Jolly green giant"! The Length has changed abit, but he says they still fit Kathy. LOL! They sure have gotten their wear! That is why I thought I would teach him how to make his very own. He will be happy about this.

I will post a picture of Fransisco tonight in my profile pictures,I'll have to check out the blog area too.

We go to their school concerts too, soo cute! We have one this Sunday, Frank had me to hem his new pants. The school teachers knows us as well as their own parents.

I can't wait to see his blocks, and the progress he's made myself!!

He has his own profile, I signed him up as a member (no stars tho, he can watch the shows on mine  but the only thing he's finished is Sidney's quilt which he made for my sister's dog... I think he's a real quilter at heart b/c he's surrounded by UFOs already! I wanted him to post a convergence (top) he made but he doesn't want to until it's finished... but he's not working on that anymore. I'll try to get him to put some of his WIPs up soon-- I told him about Fransisco and he thought I was lying! :? Florence

Florence

Thats great,we're looking forward to seeing his c/quilt. No lies here or there! Though Frank didn't make it over today, I'm sure he wants to get his first block finished before he comes over. He is a real proud kid, always eager to impress his teachers, He is a really good kid! All three children are. I will put up a picture of the three of them until I get photos of him working on his project.
