"A new male quilter is on the rise"
Fransisco 10, Mariana 7, Jasmine 8,
I have three young spanish children living next door to me, and they come over almost every day, and they have been watching me sew for the last three years now. They have become apart of our family. Every now and again they would ask me; when are you going to teach us.
I have 6 sewing machines that I've collected from yard sales, and good will. I got one of my Singers out, went over the parts over and over till they could tell me what each part was and went over all safety measures, then we moved onto how to fill the bobbins. After we could do that we went onto How to put the bobbin in its case correctly. Then we moved on to how to thread the machine. Tell ya what they learnt this pretty fast,"very eager learners" the Girls wanted to play so they lost abit of interest.
"Not Fransisco", he has told everyone at school he has a new sewing machine, he got afew mixed feelings but over all the adults praised him, he is thrilled. Some of his friends said that was abit strange. I told him some of your best quilters are men. I showed him afew of Ricky Tims quilts. He thought that was just awesome. He says he will be that good soon with abit of practice, too Cute! Soon as he gets his home work done he comes running for lessons. First lesson was to learn to sew straight lines 1/4 lines and get use to a med speed comfort.
Today we cut squares out, he is going to make a twin size quilt. A Simple nine patch. We went over the ironing fabric and seams.1/4 inch seam allowance. He is going to learn how to make a completed quilt. He says; is it going to take about 2-3 weeks? I told him not to worry about the time it takes him but to enjoy the process of making it. Then he asked me what I liked most about sewing? I told him their are many things that I like about sewing, Its about creating something that I made on my own that brings warmth and beauty, happiness to me and to others.
He says Ill get to learn how to make alot of things like you make won't I ? yes, I told him that he would also be creating things on his very own too. I made the children pajama bottoms and this will be his next project, he will be thrilled to make his very own. He says; should I bring my sewing machine with me when I come over to work on my blanket I told him that would help me alot to help teach him. He's So Cute!
I will put up a photo of Frank and his progress soon. He is doing good.
