My first Harmonic Convergence

Postby AuntSewsie » Tue Oct 23, 2007 2:39 pm

I've posted the picture of my grand convergence in the Quilt Gallery. I am anxious to do another one! :)

Sue, your convergence is beautiful! I have done 5 of them, but haven't been brave enough to do a curved one! Yours inspires me.

Linda,
That is high praise ... I looked at your quilts and they are awesome. I especially liked Twisted Ribbon. Bargello is high up on my list of quilts to make!!! But I absolutely fell in love with curved piecing ever since I took a class on setting in circles. Now anything less than a circle seems easy! I guess it's all relative. :) Just get out your freezer paper and go crazy!!!

my first convergence

Postby snowplow3840 » Tue Oct 23, 2007 9:20 pm

Sue you have convinced me --- even though my to do list is way to long a grand convergence just went on it. Oh welll I knew the day would come just wasn't sure when or why now to Houston and a search for just the right fabric. and your grand convergence is gorgeous and you did it yourself even if you stuck close to the "master's " design Isn't that what any good disciple does at first. And by the way the rest of your quilts are beautiful too. You are one creative lady.

so to all the rest of you convergence addicts or wannabee convergence addicts we have a new challenger on the block. Let us take up the challenge and see how many "grands" we can do the eternal convergence addict, Ann (now I wonder if I can figure out how to sneak a chantelle into a grand convergence HMMMM lets see what happens)

Oh, thank you, Ann. Gosh, I had no idea there would be so many Grand Convergence fans here! And the next one will be my own design. I was just so afraid to cut into those fabrics not knowing the outcome for sure. Now I have some confidence. Happy fabric hunting in Houston!

Sue,
How long did it take you to make your beautiful quilt? I really love what you did.

Oh, boy. I can never answer that question when people ask me how long it takes me to make one of my quilts. I have no clue. I can tell you, though, when I make something "artsy" it takes me a long time. My creative process is slow and I agonize over every decision ... even on this one when I basically copied a picture in Ricky's book!!!! One problem I encountered was that I only had fat quarters of this hand-dyed fabric and I was running out of big pieces towards the end and couldn't decide how to do the border. So I put it on my design wall and looked at it for a couple weeks!! :?

Well, I know I didn't answer your question at all. If you have a firm idea in your mind of what you want to do, it wouldn't take long at all.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I just finished my first Harmonic Convergence. It's still not blocked -- I need to find a cat-free area of carpet to accomplish that! (It may never happen...)

I didn't have enough of one of the fabrics, so my beginning squares were only 12 inches instead of 14 or 16, but I think it still looks cool. I used what I had in my stash, so I'll definitely make better selections next time around.

In person I rather like the corner squares, but they really don't look good in the photo. Oh, well! Next time I'll take a photo before I assemble the border.

(Photo is on my profile.)

Ruthann,
That convergence is beautiful! I have the fabrics chosen, just have to get going.
I also love your machine applique and the little bird. Isn't it great to have so many people with so many different techniques and encouragement :?: :D
