Will you look at this pattern for me..........

......and tell me if the dimensions for the flying geese units, or star points, look right to you? I thought a flying geese unit was supposed to be half as tall as it is wide and that's not the case with this.

I've ordered this fabric online and thought the pattern was cute but now I'm wondering if I'm not going to have to change things around to make it work.

Thanks for looking!!

Cute, maybe you could make a sample block to see if that is what want? The pattern looks correct to me.

Ya know, I think I'm putting too much in the unit being a flying geese block, which would be twice as wide as it is tall, and not just looking at it as a star point.

I think you've got the right idea. I'll try doing a block and just see what happens. Thanks for your input!! :D

Granted I have not done this pattern, but looking at the instructions the point in the flying geese is not giving a 1/4 seam allowance so when you sew the block together it will cut the point off. Like a said I have not sewn this block, but have sewn flying geese before. It might be the picture in the instructions is poor.

Thanks, Cheryl. I'm taking a play-day off work tomorrow and I'm going to just make a sample block and see what happens. I'll let you all know how it comes out.

I looked at it too and it think the problem with the seam allowance is just the picture - the measurements look right. Just remember the tips of those side triangles should overlap over top the center one a quarter inch, not meet right at the top.

The measurements are correct. Remember that it's the FINISHED size that is twice as wide as it is high. The cut rectangle is 2 3/4 by 5 inches. With 1/4 inch seam on every side, that means that finished, it's 2 1/4 by 4 1/2. Two times 2 1/4 IS 4 1/2.

Would have been easier to see if it had been 2 by 4 finished or even 2.5 by 5. Those pesky fractions are still getting to us, aren't they?

And you're right, the illustration is misleading. Using 2 3/4 inch squares will put the point 1/4 inch away from the edge, not ON the edge like the picture shows.

Go for it! Looks like a cute pattern!
