Multiple Machines

Multiple Machines

Postby JANBLOCK » Thu Jul 26, 2007 3:36 am

Maybe this is a silly question, but why do many of you keep multiple machines? I have two, my much lover Bernina Aurora 440 QEE which does everything from general sewing to embroidery , and my very light-weight Singer for classes. What else do I need? I can see having a Serger, but beyond that, I'm mystified. Do you just love them so much, or do you actually use them all for different applications?

Please visit my Blog. Thanks, Jan P.

I started with a Pfaff 1471 and loved it so much that I wanted to get a back-up machine to take some of the stress off the Pfaff. BUT I ended up getting a used machine - a SECOND Pfaff 1471!! LOL.. They alternate in my sewing center, and do the bulk of piecing and garment sewing.
Since then I have acquired a BabyLock Professional Quilter, which is a straight stitch only machine with a much deeper throat space, which I use for heavy fabrics (tent canvas) and free motion quilting.
Then the machine bug really bit hard, and I got a Pfaff 2030 to take to classes (it lives in the travel case with duplicates of my favorite rulers etc.)
I don't have a surger at this time..

I can remember wondering why anyone would want more than one machine myself! I have 2, and a serger.

I recently traded my Bernina 440 in on a 630, and oh how I hated to do so! If I had the space, I would have kept it, it's such a wonderful machine! I would also adore having a stand alone coverstitch machine.

As for use... well my Bernina 630 is setup all the time as my embroidery unit. My 730 is the machine I use for all my general sewing, piecing and quilting. I would dearly love to have a 2nd one for backup, as I go nuts when it has to go in for service and I'm without for awhile.

I wouldn't mind having an older mechanical, heavy duty machine for doing things with upholstery and leather either.

Got my Walmart Singer when I started quilted, then got my Pfaff 360 by lucky accident. I use them both-Singer for piecing, Pfaff for machine quilting.

Bernina 930 - the workhorse that is my primary machine
White Serger (whatever the number is!) - handy for lots of stuff
Singer Featherweight 1938 - for classes and being cute ;)
Bernina 1008 - sometimes we have family sewing sessions and with three children, I need more machines so they aren't waiting around for long :)
Voyager 17 on a Stretch Frame - because it is easier to quilt on than my DSMs

machines

I use a janome 1001 for embroidary, which I used to use for everything but decided I needed to take the stress off it (thats was the excuse I used). Then went to the quilt show in Nashville last year and purchased a brother innovis for regular sewing and quilting. It is a great machine which I truly love. I also have a singer that is put away and used when one of my machines in for service. I also have a serger, which I would like to learn more about. Nonna

What is a coverstitch machine?

Look at one of your tshirt hems. See how it looks serged on the wrong side, and has a double row of stitching on the front? That's the cover stitch.

My serger will do both, but I have to convert it from one to the other. I don't have room for 2 separate machines so I chose an all in one machine.

I only have two - A Sears Kenmore computerized machine and an older Sears Kenmore basic machine. The old one was my primary machine until here just a few months ago, but after nearly 7 years of use and abuse I have retired it to my machine for travel or classes - at least until my girls are old enough to learn to use it. I think that machine will be a good easy one for them to learn on. I can't wait till the day I can afford a Phaff or Bernina though

1. Bernina 1080 - my main machine
2. 1952 Singer 15-91 as a back up. Using is more and more as I really like sewing on it.
3. A 1920 Singer 66-1 Redeye treadle. Just finished restoring this one. If I every lose electricity for any length of time I can still sew.
4. A Singer 99K - similiar to a Featherweight but a bit heavier.
5. A Juki TL98Q used for freemotion quilting and on a Hinterberg machine frame.
6. A 1941 Singer 201-2 rotary. I've been looking for this machine for a long long time
7. A 1930 Free Westinghouse " Stratford" VS machine.

I am guilty as charged, Jan! I have:

1.) Old Brother machine from WM that I received when I graduated frm HS many moons ago. It's been in a box in the garage for years, but I can't bear to part with it -- mainly because it has some unusual decorative stitches that I just know I'm going to NEED one of these days!

2.) I bought a Janome 8080 in 2003 when I got into quilting. It's a good, lower priced machine that I still use whenever I'm doing heavy sewing at home. I really love it. I am tempted by all of the bells and whistles of the more advanced Janomes or perhaps a Bernina ... but I haven't been able to justify another purchase yet. :)

3.) Number 3 is a small kid-like machine that does nothing but a straight stitch. This was the first one I bought to throw in a suitcase when I'm on the road for work. This one really needs to go. I just haven't found a home for it yet.

4.) Janome Sew-Mini -- this was my upgraded "travel" machine that I've used for about a year now. It does a basic straight stitch and zig-zag. Good for paper piecing and it easily fits in a suitcase. Although I have now purchased an upgrade (see below), I will probably still keep this one for those times when I need to put it in my suitcase and go.

5.) Singer CE-200 -- I found this on Craigslist last year. I've always wanted to try embroidery, so I took the leap. All I've used it for so far is some basic embroidery, but it does sew as well. This one is set up in my home studio just in case anyone ever wants to come sew with me.

6.) The most recent addition -- a Janome Gem Platinum 760. I had been waiting for the right excuse to buy a GREAT travel machine -- and earlier this month, I found it! A store in Delaware had them 1/2 price. That was all I needed to hear! :)

Ok ... that's the story of one girl and six machines!

Hugs 'n' pieces,
Chelley

I'm trying to work up a good justification for a Bernina with a BSR and maybe an embroidery module. In the meantime, I have 4 machines and a serger.
A Bernina Activa 140 - my first Bernina. (I upgraded to get needle down, knee lift, and 1/2 speed motor)
A Bernina 153QE - my current workhorse
A Brother PQ1500S to use on my New Joy quilting frame
A Janome Jem Gold

AND a Singer serger that I bought at Walmart on clearance which works fine, so far ... but yes, I'd like to have a cover stitch for DGD's clothes.

OK. I stood in front of a Brother Innovis at Wal-Mart the other day. Yes--no--yes--no. I have my Janome Quilters Companion that I love but it is my only machine. I get tired of switching from machine quilting to piecing and back when ADD takes over. Taking the Janome in for routine maintenance almost requires medication for withdrawal. Thanks guys, I've made up my mind. YES!!!!

Multiple machines

Postby pknord » Thu Jul 26, 2007 8:00 pm

It comes down to having the right tool for a job, LOL. Does a carpenter only need one screwdriver or hammer? Right now, I have my Davis Vertical Feed treadle, c. 1909, set up with a seam guide to make a perfect scant 1/4 inch seam (I test it by sewing 3 strips that measure 1 1/2 inches wide together, then measure to make sure it measures exactly 3 1/2 inches wide), a Singer 31-15 treadle c. 1913 set up with ballpoint needle to make a knit dress, shorts, etc., a Singer 319 treadle c. 1956 to do zigzag and fancy stitches, a Wheeler and Wilson treadle c. 1900 set up with orange thread for a particular job, and so on. When I get around to it, one machine will be set up with a buttonholer on it for when needed. I love all 23 treadles and 14 hand crank machines, and use a lot of them. I've made at least one quilt block on each of them except the two most recent additions to the collection.

Ya know Pat, one of these days Ricky and Alex are going to have to come and do a segment on your treadle collection. I would just love the opportunity to see it. :D
