TQS/AAQI Challenge 2012

eyeonquilts wrote:Clara, I have some questions. Forgive me if they have already been addressed here. I am just now getting to this forum thread and am too lazy to read 15 pages worth to see if the answers are already there! First of all, when I go to the TQS challenge page, some of the quilts have prices and some don't. Does that mean that if there is not a price posted that it has already sold? or what?
Also, is there an easy to understand link somewhere to understanding all we need to know about copyright issues? I stupidly thought that if you bought a pattern you could do whatever you wanted to do with the completed project - but apparently not. Am I correct to assume that any traditional block would not be a copyright issue?
I think what you've done here is amazing and I do want to participate, both in making quilts and buying them, but it will have to wait until fall as my spring and summer are pretty well spoken for.
Thanks for organizing this,
Kalynn

The TQS page on the AAQI's website shows the quilts that have been donated, photographed and info processed. The ones with prices are up for sale right way on their website. The ones without, they might be holding for an auction of for sale at a quilt show.

Copyright issues. Woof. that's a big one. Older traditional blocks like, 9 patch, bow tie, ...etc are public domain and hold no copyright. If you have purchased a pattern, I would suggest looking at your pattern for any copyright info or contact info and get permission through them.

I will send Ami an email on this and see if she can help.

The copyright issue is a tough one, but we always want to err on the side of caution, so even if you purchased a pattern, unless it says you may use it to make items for sale, we'd need a letter from the pattern designer saying it's ok to donate it to the AAQI, because we will be selling it. It's a little hassle, but I've never heard of any designer refuse permission. Non-profits have to be SO careful to dot all our "i"s and cross all those "t"s!

That's great Clara. I can't imagine who would have bought them but my two heart ones have sold already! Whoo-hoo!

My May quilt is ready to go now too. I used one of the embroideries from the Tambani project. I emailed Ina LeRoux for permission and her response was "I think it is a wonderful idea to make a small quilt for such a worthy cause. Please go ahead, no copyright problems." So that's what I have done. The only problem was that they are almost as wide as the 9" max width. I did this one just to test whether it would work as an idea. I will register it soon.

The embroidery has so much personality to it. Love it.

About Copyright Laws. Put into a nutshell. If you your quilt came from another source, photo, pattern, book, etc. it is always a good idea to get written permission before selling it or having it displayed at another source. Copyright law is tricky and even I as an artist and graphic designer have troubles with it. Since this is for a non profit, most will give their permission without hesitation and appreciate the respect of asking. AAQI has to protect themselves because they display the quilts for sale on their website, for sale, auction and show.

Here is a link to some additional copyright permission info on AAQI's site.
http://www.alzquilts.org/permission.html

I don't know a resource off hand that has a listing of copyright free designs (public domain). If anyone knows it, please post. That might be a great resource for all of us to look into.

Hope this helps.

Rita -

We are so on the same wavelength! That was exactly what I've been planning to do, but hadn't gotten around to getting permission. I think it's a wonderful way to help two wonderful causes at the same time!!

I was thinking about making some Alzheimer's: Priority Quilts with some of my SOTTTs half-square triangles. What do you think? I have plenty.

Nancy, Just bear in mind that there is very little room for quilting on these panels as they are almost 9" to begin with. I cut the border down so that I could make it work.

Clara, what a great idea to use some of your Sotts HSTs. It won't take many. Rosemary is going to send me a spare spool or two and I will make those into an AAQI quilt.

Yes, please don't make your pieces any larger than 9" on the shortest side! This is a finished measurement, not a pre-binding measurement. I HATE sending quilts back, but I have to if they are over the size limit! Please measure carefully.

Hi Diane -

No worries! My quilts will definitely be within the size limit! I'm a little excessively detail-oriented, as my friends can attest to....

The larger Tambani embroideries just barely make the size limits, but I think are cute with just a binding added and some nice embellishments like Rita did on hers. There are also smaller embroideries that are about 3"x3.75" that I'm going to order for this. They will give more space for playing around and still help both causes.

I just put the binding on my latest Alzheimer's quilt last night and will decide tonight if I want to add some crystals to make it really sparkle. I'll post a picture once it's complete.

Thanks!!

Nancy
