Multiple Machines

Postby kimber » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:38 am

I have 3 machines plus a serger (that I rarely use anymore!). My Juki is exclusively for quilting on my frame. My Viking is used for all my piecing. I also have a Kenmore that my dad bought for me when I was in college. It still runs really great and I have it for my back-up machine. I'd love to get a featherweight of some sort to use in classes, but I haven't taken enough classes to justify building up my portability... yet :-)

Oh Dear, I think we must have the bug bad in our house!
As well as myself I have three girls who sew, one is doing an "a" level textiles course whilst the youngest is determined to be a fashion designer

We have (So far anyway!)
1} Brother NX600 that is used for most jobs, i bought it before i started quilting and it has made learning all these new techniques so much easier! Its used by all of us for everything from piecing to free machine embroidery
2} Janome 640D serger, used for all the usuals as well as loads of decorative stuff. Just started trying it out with heavy decorative threads
3} Yamata straight and zigzag stich industrial machine. Ive just bought this and its going to be used for free machine quilting once ive swopped the motor for a slower speed one! Its also for fixing our ponies winter rugs (clean ones of course!)
4,5,6} the girls all have a basic sewing machine bought as christmas presents which are all out in various positions around the house
7,8} Singer 221k featherweights, one to keep for classes and one to sell......... if i can bear to part with it!
9}Singer Merit bought in 1976 for my Mum by my Dad, great for Free machine embroidery when we need more that one machine set up!
10} Singer treadle machine purchased for £30 with a fantasic box of bits that get used with the other machines.
11} FristerRossman hand cranked machine from aprox 1898, found in an attic and used by all the girls at some time to practise on. I also take this one into local schools, dressed as a victorian housekeeper and show how it works.

Now i wonder if i can sneak in the following:
a mid/long arm machine
Embellisher/felter
A berniner with BSR.

Good job my partner loves me!

I need a ruse to get my husband to read the posts in this thread, so he doesn't think I'm the ONLY sewing machine fanatic on the planet.

I have:
Bernina 140 - my first Bernina. Wonderful, but no knee lift, needle up/down or half motor speed. However, I just can't sell it; it's my backup machine.
Bernina 153QE - use for most piecing and quilting of smaller quilts.
Janome Jem Gold - small and light weight. Use for classes or for guest machine.
Brother PQ1500 straight stitch machine - use on my New Joy quilting frame.
Singer Serger - bought it on clearance at Wal-Mart for $95. Works great so far.

I'm off to Kansas City this weekend to visit my DS, DD and DGD (7 months). I'm thinking I might need to buy a machine to keep there so I don't have to haul one

I have a Bernina 150 (9 years old), a Pfaff 7570 (10 years old) A Bernina 2000DE Serger(16 years old) and a 1936 Featherweight. I have sewed thousands of hours on my two machines and alot on the serger too....and they have given me great service. I've never wanted a new one,
UNTIL...............I went to the Super Seminar in Knoxville last month and saw the Bernina 730 being used in all the demo's. I didn't even allow myself to sit down to one and sew...I only rubbed my hand across it and that was enough.....but I resisted and probably will be wanting it for a long time.

how many machines

Postby QuilterInaGarden » Mon Feb 11, 2008 8:48 pm

Here's my count:

Viking Lily
Viking Quilt DesignerII
1936 Singer 221 Featherweight
3 Singer Sewhandy toy machines
Singer 237 (1965) Fashionmate
Singer treadle

I like all of them for different reasons and wouldn't part with any at this point. I am trying to build up my colletion of the toy machines to do a little sewing club in the school where I teach. The Singer 237 is at school and we use it to sew the bindings of little journals and sketchbooks in my classroom.
The treadle machine puzzles me. I have had it for nearly two years and I don't know how to work the bobbin.

multiple machines

Postby snowplow3840 » Mon Feb 11, 2008 10:20 pm

Last summer we bought a second machine (trade off for dh's new motorhome that I didn't know was in the thought process at the time) Thought all last summer and this early winter that I would have to go back to one machine for the summer and then my bread machine began to give out again (about the third one) and I remembered that they do not survive well over the summer in an empty house in sometimes very hot Texas. so translating that to a sewing machine I thought ---wow wonder what the heat would do to my back up machine and do I want to know?---- well dh hates to carry anything extra in the motorhome in the summer (extra spools of thread get evaluated carefully if I can't sneak them in unnoticed) so my thinking is here goes the "its too much weight" argument all over again. WAS I SURPRISED --- when I said we need to take both machines next summer because I do not want them to freeze up from the heat, he said oh you are right that is a good idea. WEll after I picked myself up off the floor I decided that was enough battle for now next one is we have to take the stash so the bugs and rodents don't attack it. I will post you on my progress there WISH ME LUCK. ANN

Quilter-in-a-garden, if you go to:

http://www.treadleon.net/sewingmachines ... uttle.html

you'll find lots of good info on operating your treadle.

Pat in Rockport, TX, who still has 23 treadles, but is down to only 12 hand cranks.

I have a Bernina 150 that I have worked hard for years-
Just bought a Bernette to bring to retreats, etc.
have a surger I haven't used in a very long time
and of course if it counts-- my gammill
and I still have the singer treadle machine I learned how to sew on, but doesn't work because it needs a new belt :-)
and my wishlist - a bernina embroidery machine with BSR!!

Linda in Minnesota where it is starting to warm up a bit -- yeah!

Wow.... After reading this string of posts I don't feel bad at all. LOL
I traded my first Bernina 150QE in on a Pfaff. Then passed that Pfaff onto a family member. Donated a Brother 1500 to a Katrina charity.
My inventory now (and for keeps) is:

Pfaff 2054
Bernina Arista 630
2 - Black Featherweights
1 - White Featherweight
1 - Singer Treadle (belongs to my daughter)
1 - Gammill Classic Plus

All machines work. I have made one quilt on the Featherweight and it sews like a dream. I can't get the hang of the Treadle. I remember my mom sewing on one, though.
