quilt stand for quilt shows

Can anyone give advice on where to find patterns or directions to make quilt frames to hang quilts at a show? I've seen them made with PVC, metal rods and some of wood. What is the best material to use and where can I find information on how to make them for our guild's first show this fall? Janet in Detroit

Hi Janet -

Our guild is less than 2 years old and we were looking into the possibility of having our first show next year. After researching the various aspects of building our own display stands, we've decided to put our show off for a year or so and raise enough funds to have a professional decorating firm come in who will rent us the stands, draping fabric and hangers and will also take care of the setting-up and taking-down.

Several factors came into play, not the least of which was, "Where will we store the framework in between shows?" - and "Who's going to want to store and press miles of draping fabric?"

Just a thought -

quilt frames

How do you find a company that does that kind of thing? Where do you begin to look? We would love to be able to rent some stands, and we have been referred to other guilds. The problem is either their stands are inferior and not stable, or they won't rent them out due to liability insurance or they are located too far away to realistically use them. So what kind of company would have stands to rent? What would I look at in the phone book? We are in the same situation as your guild, we are a newer group with limited funds, so making a lot of frames ourselves may not be financially feasible. Our show is going to be in a large church sanctuary. We were going to do the old fashioned display of draping quilts on the pews and hanging some around the perimeter. The church is out more in a rural area, so a small quaint country show would fit the location. Once we have one show under our belt, we will have more money in the treasury to fund a larger show at a bigger location.

If anyone knows of where we could get a hold of some plans for quilt frames to display the quilts, I am sure lots of people in guilds would be interested. Janet

Is there a museum nearby that you could contact for advice? Or an art gallery?

Hi Janet -
You can do an internet search for Party Rentals, Event Rentals, etc. To give you an idea, this is the place one of the larger local guilds used last year
http://www.eventsplustx.com/

She said other than the rental of the actual venue, this was the biggest budget item. They brought it all in a big truck and their crew had the whole place set up in a couple of hours. She said it was well worth the expense. All she had to do was give them a layout a week prior to the quilt show and the company took care of set up and tear down.

That should get you started anyway - at least you'll have information to base $$$ decisions on.

Good luck -
