Let the Mystery Begin - Fabric Yardage

10/06/2008: Well, I have had quite a few positive replies to the idea of a Mystery Quilt. I will start by giving you the fabric yardages. Each week I will add a step to the mystery. I would start by choosing a Focus Fabric and then choose the other fabrics from there. The light background fabric does not have to be a white or cream color, as long as it is a light. I chose a light lavendar for my quilt. I used a focus that was a purple and gold kind of a paisley print. My light was lavendar, the dark was a dark purple and the bright was a gold color. I hope that helps a little. Kathy Mystery Quilt - 48" X 60" without borders 60" X 72" with borders Fabric: Fabric A - Bright - 3/8 yd Fabric B - Dark - ¾ yd Fabric C - Light Background - 2 ¼ yd Fabric D - Medium Focus Fabric - 2 ¼ yd If you want to add borders you will need an additional 1/2 yd of Fabric A and 1 yard of Fabric D.

I had thought maybe I should wash windows and clean up flower beds this weekend - but I came to my senses and will stay inside and sew!!!! I finished up putting the border on the Mystery Quilt I designed for the Badlands retreat yesterday and got the instructions printed and assembled. So I am ready for that class next weekend at the Badlands Retreat. I just have to finish up some instructions for my Citrus Slices class and I am ready to roll. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in my putting up a Mystery Quilt here on the blog. I have been designing them for our retreat for years and have quite a few I could share. What do you think, anyone up for it? DH is off this morning to help the elderly people in town to clean up their yards and trim trees. He is a member of our Lions Club here in town and they have a bunch doing it this morning. I scanned some pho... I taught three classes at the Indian Summer Quilt Show and Conference in Fargo, ND. I had a great time. I won some ribbons and the Excellence in Applique award in the show. I taught the 4-Patch Posie in the BQ setting, my pattern Sunscape/Moonscape and Free-Form Feathers. We also had a bridal shower for my sister on Sat. evening. I got to shop a little bit on Sunday afternoon and bought an outfit for the wedding for myself and Keely (DD) got shoes and a dress for under $50. We drove back on Monday. I brought Mom back home instead of Dad meeting us so that I could see my Aunt and Uncle that were stopping through from Seattle. DH and DS joined us for supper after DH got home from work so didn't get home til after 10:00. Back to work on Monday - Wed. and taught a class on Thurs. in Medicine Lake, MT. I actuall got to stay home on Friday and got started quilting on the wedding quilt. Plus I ... I have been kind of nagging him for a while! But all it took was having open gym this morning and the thought of what the basketball coach would think of the long hair and he was asking for a haircut. Shows you who's opinion rates higher. He took his own photos of himself before and after. He will not be happy if he finds out I posted these photos - but oh well!!! The haircut also got rid of most of the bleached blonde he thought he just had to have. Back to that pretty red. Before After I got my blocks sewn together with the 4-Patch blocks I posted the other day. I just need to add a border around it. We start a new year of applique club tonight at the store. We are deciding what project we want to tackle for the year. My hubby's sister came along with us today. We had a fun day out. Val and I graduated from high school together in our big class of 28 kids so have been friends since the 6th grade. We ate out twice today, once for lunch and again for dinner. I didn't buy anything exciting. Did get a new kitchen garbage can - how exciting is that? And a new fall wreath to hang by my front door. Now it is time to kick back in the recliner - after changing into those nice sweat pants! Kathy

After having some coffee this morning I tackled the rest and finished June and July blocks. Only two behind now!! I also machine appliqued a Steppin' Out Santa yesterday. I designed this guy quite a few years ago and have had several requests to teach it again. So here is my latest version. I have to add some dimensional holly leaves to Santa's crook and then decide what to do for some borders. The only example that I had left here at home was him in the center of my Christmas Sampler quilt that I use each year on my bed at Christmas. So one more thing done that needed to get done. I did some quilting on a wall hanging off and on the past week or so. I am teaching a free-form feather class in a couple of weeks and needed to have a good example of something finished. I was just happy they could save all my patterns, photos, instructions, supplies lists, ect. that I didn't even think of that. Oh, well, all that downloaded music was what actually caused the problems anyway! I have been playing with a new 4-Patch Posie and the BQ setting. I found some great African themed fabric on my Red Lodge trip and made the blocks there. So I spent this morning putting the BQ setting part together. I love it! Right now it is a 58" square so I will need to stack the other half of my fabric if I want to make it bigger. I will probably do that tonight while watching TV.
Old Settlers Weekend in Alexander, ND

08/31/2008: Well, the 63rd annual Old Settlers Weekend is over here in Alexander. 63 years ago one of the local farmers said they should have a harvest celebration and he would provide the beef for a feed. It all starts on Thurs. night with a bonfire to cook the meat in on Friday. We went down for a couple of drinks at our little bar in town. They had deep-fried a couple of turkeys and made corn on the cob. We walked across the park and watched the teenage guys playing football under the lights in the park. I don't know how they were doing it as I am sure they couldn't even really see the ball! Then over to watch the fire for a while. On Friday morning I baked four pies for the PTO pie booth. All families who have kids in school are asked to bring 3 pies. I always make at least one extra to leave at home! DH went down to help prepare the beef. He is one of the guys that chops onions for the 1300 pounds they prepare. They cut the beef into chunks, add salt, pepper and onions. Then it gets wrapped...

08/28/2008: Good Morning everyone. I hope everyone is having a great day. I am home today and hope to get some sewing done. This summer I have been working 3 days a week instead of 2 and it sures seems to cut down on my sewing time! I think I just miss that Mondy at home all alone. My hubby has Friday and Sat. off and works on Sunday so now I only or have Thurs. at home alone for most of the day while Reid is in school. We averted disaster on Sat. DS was downstairs trying to play XBox online and came upstairs because it wasn't working right. He checked the computer upstairs and noticed that the wall was hot beside the light switch. DH checked it out and we were pretty close to having a fire in the wall! Lots of heat and blackened wires in the light switch. So we were lucky it was during the day and not the middle of the night! DH has been replacing light switches around the house this week. The bad news is my computer isn't working. I will have to try to find something out about either fixing it... I had a wonderful weekend with my quilting girlfriends in Redlodge, MT. I got all the paper piecing done on the Fickle Pickle pattern. I will be teaching it later this fall so needed to get my sample done. I also stacked and cut some new 4-Patch Posie blocks with some great African feel fabric. I can't seem to find my camera so didn't get any photos while there. I am waiting on my friends to send me some. On Monday I took a class from Laurie Martin from Washington state. Very fun, free form, raw edge applique. My piece is ready to start the quilting on. She also showed quite a few embellishment techniques that will be fun to use. I worked yesterday and taught a class last night. Then had to head for Wal-Mart and pick up a few things so Reid could start school today. I just finished preparing and fusing all the pieces and I feel like I have been in a marathon I just have the circles left to do and I will wait with them until I am at the store tomorrow and can cut them with the Accu-Cut. It is the best way to make perfect circles! I am three blocks behind so did the June block first this morning. Then July and am looking at doing August this afternoon. I thought if I had them all fused I could take them on my quilting weekend and blanket stitch every once in a while. I made one boo-boo. I didn't realize I had transferred some pencil marks to my iron. I pressed my background block into quarters and there is some on my block. I really didn't notice until most of the block was fused so I am not starting over!!! I will just have to deal with the pencil marks. I took a photos of my sister's top for her wedding quilt that I finished piecing earlier this week.... This is one of my local guilds I belong to, so it is always fun when spending time with friends. I had a wide array of quilting experience in the group, from beginner to expert. There are going to be some really great quilts when they are done. I let each student choose which quilt they wanted to make from Judy Martin's Log Cabin Quilt book. Below are some photos of the projects that were started. I had 15 in the class so this is just a sampling. I tried to do the roll-over but couldn't get it to work this morning - gremlins I guess! I just added the last border to my Snake River Canyon quilt. It is from Judy Martin's new Log Cabin Quilt Book. I am teaching a weekend class on log cabin quilts and wanted to have this top finished for the class - nothing like cutting it close Anyway, I am very happy with the completed quilt. I had planned om making the twin size but liked it so much I decided to make it queen size instead so I can use it on my bed! Who knows when I will get around to quilting it, but at least the top is finished. 4460 individually cut pieces in this baby - not for the faint of heart. Now on to the next things. I need to finish my sister's wedding quilt. I have a few blocks sewn, and my niece's baby quilt. I am doing an 4-Patch Posie for the baby quilt set with the BQ 2 pattern by Maple Island quilts. I have the 4-Patches finished and it should only take me an afternoon to finish the top. Maybe I can get to that today! If I do I will post photos. Well, on the the next project. I am ... I am back from a great weekend of teaching in Brookings, SD. A 577 mile drive from my home. I had a wonderful time and I hope my students did also. I had 20 gals in my Friday Circling Geese class and 17 on Sat. The guild had a wonderful salad supper on Friday night and around 80 in attendance. My trunk show was well received. Because I drove I have plenty of room in the van to bring tons of quilts along Now comes the job of putting everything away! Yuck. Because I was so close to Mitchell, SD I went early and visited with my good friend Debbie. We had a fun time going to Mama Mia one night. The movie was very fun. Could be that the Abba music was right in my high school days! We had a big thunderstorm here this morning, just poured and the wind was crazy. I was just glad there was no hail. DH would not have been happy. He has his motorcycle loaded in the back of his pick-up for a trip to the dealer. He had two new tires put on last week and when he drove it home ... Last year at our retreat we made fabric bingo cards and played bingo with them for fat quarter prized. Each row had to have certain colors like red and pink, green, blue, ect. They also had lists of fabric types, like polka dots, batiks, flowers, metallics, plaid, leaves, stars and the list went on. So when playing bingo they would call a color and a fabric type like green batik. Anyway when we were done playing some people just wanted to toss the blocks. I volunteered to design a quilt using them for this years raffle. Then at our January sleepover we worked together and finished the top except for the applique border. Kris Jacobson took it home to finish the applique. Debbie Hendickson did the machine quilting and Janet McCabe put on the binding. We will be drawing for it at this year's retreat in Oct. For blocks that some wanted to just toss I think we ... (read more)

I have gotten a little bit of sewing done while the kids have been here. I finished up a few more blocks and have enough Snake River log cabin blocks to complete the twin size. Robert and I took off Thurs morning for her house. We spent a little time in Bismarck on the way. He stopped off at the Harley dealer just to look at the bikes. Then I was looking for a new antenna for my xm radio. Well, for $10 more I could buy a whole new radio! So I am thinking over what to do there. I do so much driving for my quilt teaching that I do enjoy my xm radio, especially that 70's station!! I also bought a new pair of Bjorn sandals for all that time on my feet. We arrived at my sister's in the early evening. Their local John Deere dealer was celebrating 40 years in the business with a pork dinner and street dance that evening. It was a really fun band and great food so was a very enjoyable evening. We set out for Rochester bright and early at 6:30 friday morning. Well, I decided not to just sit in my chair when I got home last night like I did on Monday. Took the border I didn't like off the commission quilt and got choice #2 sewn on. Yippee, I can call Gladys and get them passed along to the machine quilter. The first photo is of the store sample she originally bought. The next two are the ones she begged me to make for her other two grand-daughters. Of course we didn't have the perfect fabrics, but I think they turned out OK. We don't carry a whole lot of Civil War fabrics. They are all a little different in size because I worked around the stripe fabrics and what width they were. Then I thought you might like to see a little bit of the new classroom we are working on in the building next door to The Bent Pin. The archway connecting the two stores is finished but has been boarded up until we are finished with the renovation next door. Thanks so much TQS. I spent lots of time at the machine this weekend. I am teaching a log cabin class the first weekend in Aug. so got back to finish piecing on my Snake River Canyon quilt from Judy Martin's book. I did the center 16 blocks a few months ago and had not gotten back to it. I finished 20 blocks over the weekend so only 12 left. Of course then we get to the border which is all pieced also, but will face that when I get there. I also almost finished the commission quilt tops I have been working on. I just had the final border on one left to do. Unfortunately, I did not like the outside border fabric so went looking for something different at work yesterday.

06/20/2008: Well, just when I think I can get back to some of my UFO projects and really get something done I get interruptions. My baby sister (26 years younger that I) called and she got engaged on Sat. So guess what I will be working on - a wedding quilt. I need to sit down and decide what pattern I am going to use or if I want to design something original. The wedding date is Oct. 25th. So a few months to get busy on it. I also need to get cracking on a baby quilt for my niece Ali. She is due in Sept. so time if flying by. I am debating about making a trip to the MN quilt show next weekend. I talked to my other sister and she thought it would be a fun trip for my hubby and I, and her and her boyfriend. I have not been on an "adult" trip in years! To do this you will want to hi-light the words typed in Word, then hold down the control key and hit the letter C. Then go to the blog and click on your blog so the curser is there and flashing. Hold down the control key and hit the letter V. Worked like a charm. Thanks Linda, Kathy

They were saying that Jo-Ann's fabric had made a large profit and that sewing was coming back into style. Interesting to see this on the national news! I know with the prices of gas going up people are going to be staying home more and need things to keep them busy. I do hope the quilting industry reaps some of the benefits. The other side of the coin is that prices are going up for everything and I hope it doesn't cause people to stop spending their money on quilting for recreation. I started out the day with coffee with several friends. Then lunch with my friend Mary. Then off to the quilt store for Sit 'n Sew for the afternoon. I stuck around and helped out with the BOM we are having at the store. At Sit n' Sew I got a small quilt basted, a 4-Patch poisie stacked and started getting my May BOM ready for applique. I got almost everything cut out and ready to fuse. I spent today fusing and blanket stitching and just finished my block! Now it is off to the kitchen to get some supper started. I was going to make scalloped potatos for my guys before I left yesterday but didn't have any cream of chicken soup. So I just stuck it in the fridge and need to go throw it together for tonight. I have reached the finish line and the graduation quilt is done. I did little loops in the skinny cream colored border and then went on to the outside border feathers. I was going to switch the bobbin thread back to brown but forgot. Well, I wasn't going to tear it out! I do like how the quilting really shows on the back of the quilt. Not bad for free form feathers. I few months ago I would have marked a border like this, but after watching Sharon Schamber's videos I am feeling like I can go for it. My boss took a big step and rented the building next door that was just vacated and is going to make it a big classroom! I sure hope we can make it work. It will be wonderful to have a large space dedicated to classroom. We can get lots more students in and not be cramped. So that means we are scrambling to get more classes lined up. I hope there will be people available for afternoon classes. I am not sure I want to spend too many evenings at the shop. We are hoping to have some K...
Bookcover Pattern Source

05/08/2008: The book covers are really fun to do. I have had people asking and thought I should pass along the pattern source. The patterns are on www.averyspecialcollection.com It is a $5.00 pattern and includes paper foundation patterns for 24 bookcovers. I forgot the pattern at The Bent Pin yesterday so am doing them without the foundation patterns and just using my easy angle and companion angle to make the flying geese. There are several different strip patterns included, not just the flying geese. I also bought the pattern for the checkbook, notepad and photo album cover. These are all included in the same pattern. I missed the pattern for the cell phone sling when I was in the booth in Chicago. Very fun patterns! I almost fell for the diamond log cabin but came to my senses!! LOL They had it done in the booth and it was awsome. Happy Quilting, Kathy

I am trying to hurry and finish this graduation quilt by next Sunday and started quilting it like crazy. Why can't I just be happy with minimal quilting on things! LOL I did as much as I could today because I ran out of thread. I will have to make a run tomorrow for more. So I put the quilting away and made some paperback book covers for my Mom and MIL for Mother's Day. I had to make one for me too. I also made a couple to put in our local museums gift shop. If I am ambitious I will make some more for that. They are fast and fun. I will have to pick up a book to put in the covers while I am in town buying thread! I finished my April BOM. I am doing raw edge fusible applique for my blocks. Here is a photo of the finished block and a close-up. I machine stitched the stems with some yummy silk embroidery thread that I bought in Susan Cleveland's class. I bought several cards of it and hadn't used it until now. You can find it at http://www.quiltersresource.com/detailview.jsp?item_id=ET - I also got the top done for my niece's graduation quilt. Kisten is on her high school rodeo team so I am hoping I chose the perfect fabric for her. So today I am planning on getting it basted and start quilting. I got the back pieced and pressed last night so I am ready to roll! Here are some photos. Have a great weekend, Kathy

04/26/2008: Well, I did something really dumb. I took my camera to the Glendive, MT quilt show and forgot to put the memory card in it before I left! It is right here in my computer where I left it after my last blog! I hope I learned from this and don't make the same mistake again! It was a very nice show. They had more quilts there then I have seen at their show before. In fact they had so many they couldn't hang them all. There must have been about 30 quilts from two high schools in the area. They had to put chairs on top of tables and drape them over the chairs. What a wonderful display it made. I am so excited that these high school teachers are getting all these kids started in the art of quilting. There was everything from your basic Turning Twenty Quilts to a Bargello Heart! Here in Alexander one of my guild members is helping the Jr. High girls make rag quilts. I sure hope they catch the fever! I got back from Chicago on Monday afternoon. I worked at my LQS on Tues. and Wed. Thursday I finally got to veg out at home for a day. I think I sat on my butt most of the day! Then Friday I headed for Medicine Lake, MT for class. I taught the Easy & Elegant Lone Star from Shirley Stutz's book. We had a great time. Started the class on Friday at 4:00pm and then met again all day on Sat. This such a fun pattern to show off those wonderful large prints that you fall in love with. Just fussy cut 8 large diamonds to make the star. I spent Monday finally sitting down at the computer and writing up a couple of patterns. I promised the store i would get them done so we can sell them this weekend when we vend at the Glendive, MT quilt show. So my Moonlight Leaves and Stacked Circles patterns are now printed up and ready to go! Then on Monday evening had a guild meeting in Watford City with The Prairie Rose Quilters. I bought fabric from Cherrywood Fabrics to start a Rhapsody quilt! I got it washed and ironed today so I will be ready to start when I have time and inspiration strikes. I have my bag packed with everything I need for my Sat. class and the last load of laudry is almost dry so I should be ready to roll this evening! I am making sure I leave plenty of room in my suitcase for my purchases along the way. I just finished my Feb block this morning. So only two behind now! I just love these blocks. I am fusing and doing machine blanket stitch applique on my blocks. I also finished the last couple of blocks for my local BOM. The girls have been bugging me that they want 12 blocks instead of just nine. So I go into my EQ last week and picked out and three more blocks and set them in the frame I designed for this BOM. Thought I was done, but I guess three more isn't too bad. We have applique club tonight and wanted to get my blocks done for that. The rest of the day I will be getting ready for a weekend teaching job. Friday night truck show and classes Sat. and Sun. This past weekend was the quilt show in Minot, ND. It is about 60 miles from here. Sounds like all my brothers and sisters will be there but one so that means a full house, seven of us plus our families! It is really wonderful to have all my siblings living here in ND. Doug isn't coming because his wife works tomorrow but the rest of us will have a blast. Christmas and Thanksgiving have kind of moved to my house the last few years, but Easter is too close to lambing season for Dad to be away from the farm. I did get some sewing in the last couple of days. I tried out Debbie Bowles pattern Celebrate. This was a really fun, fast project. I love using stripes in quilts so this was perfect. I had done some 4=Patch Posey blocks a while ago and decided to try the BQ 2 pattern with these blocks. I also caught up with a couple of applique blocks from our local applique club. I am doing invisible machine applique on them and they are fairly simple so they didn't take too long. What else did I do? Oh, yes, printed out some patterns that I needed to get to the LQS and a couple mailed out. Plus I washed and blocked my Jacobean Applique quilt. I start out by going to Medicine Lake, MT to teach a Circle A Round class. This is an 84 mile drive from my home. Then I have to book it back to my LQS and head up the Applique Club meeting. I will hand out this months block and plan on giving a demo on how Ricky uses Steam-a-Seam 2. I loved in the Rhapsody blog how he fused first, them peeled back the paper and traced. I might begin to like using Steam-a-Seam 2. I had never liked how crinkly it was to track with the two layers of paper. Plus half the time I seemed to trace on the wrong side of the paper, the one that wanted to peel off first! Then I am off to the Championship basketball game for region 8. My son plays C-squad and some JV basketball for the Watford City Wolves. The Varsity team is playing for a spot in the class-B State basketball tournament next weekend. The boys are the only undefeated team in the state and have been ranked #1 in the polls the whole season. I hope the press... Several years ago a few of us decided to do one of Pam Bono's block of the month quilts. (I can't even remember how many years ago!) We were going to faithfully meet once a month and finish the blocks in a year. Well, I did block #10 yesterday! Where does the time go? Life just gets in the way sometimes. Anyway, it was great to get together with Mary, Kathleen and Di to work on our projects and catch up on everything going on with everyone. As always, we wondered why we don't do this more often. Of course that would involve not having jobs, husbands, children ect! I don't think we are willing to give those up for quilting, but some days I think we are all tempted! LOL Here is my finished block from the day. I also promised a photo of the baby quilt I finished for my new nephew, Cade Walker Moorhead. Here is a closeup of the fun little cowboy fabric I used. Happy Trails til next time, Kathy

If you recognize the name, they were the winners in the "What's In a Name" contest in Quilter's Newletter. I was teaching my Moonlight Leaves class. We use the Cut A Round tool to cut circles and frames for the "moons". Then did fused leaves with machine blanket stitch applique. Here are photos of some of the blocks made in class today. Arlene's blocks Lorna's blocks Doreen's blocks Terri's blocks Mary Lou's blocks - the colors aren't very true, They are beautiful in black, white and reds. Here is Karen and one of her blocks. She looks like a happy student! Here is my finished quilt. I hope you all had time to sew today!

02/28/2008: Well, I was going great guns, machine quilting my niece's graduation quilt but ran out of the color thread I was using. I will have to pick some up tomorrow. Because I ran out of thread I did get the binding made for it so I will be ready to go when the quilting is finished. I also finished my new nephew's baby quilt this morning. I got it washed and it is drying flat on my living room floor today. Maybe I will get a photo up tomorrow. I taught a class on Tues. night on machine quilting free form feathers. I have been using Sharon Schamber's techniques and really am enjoying playing with them. I have signed up to the Sharon Schamber network and downloaded lots of her demonstrations and lessons. They are great. www.sharonschamber.com Well, time to kick back and relax for a couple of hours before bed. I recorded American Idol while watching Survivor so have to check that out! I still feel like I am under water and don't hear like I should. I am hoping it will clear up this weekend so I don't have to make a trip to the dr. for meds. We were going to move our daughter to Fargo this weekend but those plans fell through with vehicle problems. Looks like we might have to get her a different car before she can move. Her old one is not running like it should and is burning oil like crazy. Just what we needed. So we will be checking out the used car lots tomorrow. She was going to move down and get a job until beauty school starts in July. I did finish my Pineapple Star miniature this week between naps! It was nice doing something small for a change! I have almost finished a baby quilt for my new nephew. I will post of photo of that later. Happy Quilting, Kathy

I have quilts that are going to be in one the special exhibits in Chicago and am thinking I should make the trip. I could hop on the train pretty easily. My problem is I don't want to be by myself. Here is the whole thing! It all started with the Patricia Campbell fabrics that I found on a road trip. I didn't have any idea what I was going to make with them, but had to have some. Then one of the groups that I teach for wanted me to teach them the Pineapple Star pattern from Sharon Rexroad's book. When I finished the center of the quilt it just begged for some of Patricia Campbell's Jacobean applique. I borrowed her book from a friend and enlarged the corner block patterns to fit my quilt. There wasn't a triangle pattern in the book, so I played with some of the shapes in the book to come up with the triangle shaped applique block. Then I got to the outer border and of course had not bought enough fabric - there was only 2 repeats - so had to go on an online search for more of the fabric. I was lucky enough to find some, plus the stripe that goes with it that I used on the inner border. I then fini... I am so excited about how it turned out. I will try and get a photo up of the whole quilt soon. I am debating about doing a little more machine quilting in the interior of the quilt. As it always seems to happen, I made my binding and ended up with two of the four corners wanting to land where I had sewn strips together. So I had to stop, cut a few inches off the binding and resew the strips together. I was also having a brain freeze when it came to sewing the binding together as it came around to meet. I usually draw the 45° line where the one strip overlaps the other and add 1/2" to that and cut the binding. Well, I made it 1/2" shorter instead of longer! You would think I had been in the wine or something! LOL Maybe I should have a glass to celebrate getting it done! Happy Quilting, Kathy

I got the piping made and attached to my quilt plus the binding cut and sewn together. So tomorrow I will be sewing the binding on. This is the frist large quilt I have used Susan's technique on. I have done the binding on a small project and have done a project with her Piping Hot Curves book. If you haven't tried it, don't shy away. It is a great technique. We were lucky enough to have Susan teach for The Badlands Guild retreat in Oct. If you ever have a chance to take a class with Susan you will have a blast. Below is a photo of my quilt using the Piping Hot Curves book. My SIL asked me to make her something for her bathroom. She had moved back to this area when her partner Ed passed away last year. The piping is along the curves of the circles. The chopsticks were Ed's that he used whenever they ordered out for Chinese. I attached them by hand using the transparent nylon thread. I had great fun quilting this one. I di... (read more)

I just heard that 2 of my quilts were accepted into the Traditional Treasures V special exhibit in Chicago next month. My quilt Good and Plenty and Garden Sampler will be making their way there without me! Its good they can travel and enjoy new places and me new quilts along the way. Someone sent me an email saying that they learned the 1/4" border trick for Ricky and thought maybe that where I learned it. Alas, I have not had the pleasure of taking one of Ricky's classes. I did see him present his music and a bit about himself at the Minnesota Quilt Show about 9 years ago. I think that Harriet Hargrave taught it at one of the classes I took from her. Good ideas make their way around. I just got back from a three day trip to Fargo, ND so my daughter and my niece could check out Joseph's School of Hair Design. They are thinking of starting in July. This Mom would be thrilled! Keely went to 2 semesters of business school and decided it wasn't for her and has been home for alm...
1/4" border info

It is actually a pieced 1/4" border. It has been so long ago that I can't remember who taught me how to do this but here is an explanation for getting perfect 1/4" borders. 1. cut the fabric for the 1/4" border at 3/4". Sew it right sides together to whatever fabric you are adding it to. 2. Press away from the 1/4' border. 3. Here is the trick. When adding the next border do not look at the right side of the quarter inch foot, watch along the left side of the foot and run it right next to your first stitching. This will insure that your border is 1/4" not something that is really wavy looking. 4. Press away from the 1/4" border 5. Viola!

02/02/2008: I want to thank everyone who commented on the borders of my quilt. I had thought the dark blue border was too much but then again I didn't want to take it off. I figured if enough of you thought the blue border was better I wouldn't have to do it!!! LOL My other problem is that I don't have much of the second choice fabric and will have to piece the borders. It was a fat quarter I had gotten on one of my travels and I have no idea where to get more. So I guess it will just have to be pieced. I don't think it will show too much, especially after it is quilted. So the blue border has been taken off the quilt and I will ge to putting the other border on this evening. Thanks again! Now I am thinking I don't like it and may need to change it! I think I should take a poll and see what you all think! So here it is with the dark blue border and with the other choice, what do you think? I also added the last black strip around my 4-Patch Posie quilt last night. I did the 4-Patch Posies (HD Designs) and cut 3 1/2" squares so that the block is a 6" finished block. Then I used Debbie Bowles BQ pattern in the half size to finish a 9" block. When I tried putting them block to block like the pattern calls for it was just too busy so added a 2" sashing between them. I like it a lot better. Now I am out of both the floral and the bamboo stripe fabric so am checking on finding more for either a small border before a final black border or to just use as binding. I love combining different patterns and changing them to make them my own. Now I need to get back to machine quilting! Then a trip to Sidney, MT th...
