I started blocks in Houston in 2007 in Margaret Miller's Angle Play class and had never gotten back to them. We are having Margaret teach for us in Sept. so thought I should get my butt in gear and at least get a top together. Anyway, here is the result. It is her sampler setting from Stunning Angle Play Quilts. I thought I would throw in a photo of my poppies. I a m not a gardener and just put things in the ground and hope they will grow. Should I cut the seed pods that are left after the poppies bloom or just leave them? Seems like there are a lot of wonderful gardeners here also! Happy Quilting, Kathy

The sun is shining and the wind isn't blowing - yet! I finished my paisley blocks over the weekend. I will have to pick up fabric for the applique border today at work. I am happy that I was able to use fabric from my stash for the blocks. I had background fabrics left-over from my Snake River Canyon LogCabin quilt and left-overs from a fat-quarter packet I won and used in a Lessons from Mama quilt. I think I have red I could use for the sashing from that quilt, but it is suposed to be the binding on the Lessons from Mama. So I will be debating on that issue! We went fishing on Sat. with my parents for our Father's Day outing. DH works on Sunday so couldn't plan for the actual day. I caught two walleye, Reid caught a really nice one and my Dad caught one. We caught lots of Northern Pike but just threw them back. DH caught a couple of carp. One big one that took him a while to actually get to shore. He was... Yesterday I woke up with the flu. I can tell you that I have not had the stomach flu for years and I don't want to have it any time soon again! I just hope no one else in the house gets it! I am still catching up from the trip to Duluth. I sat and read all the blogs to catch up on what everyone has been up to. Boy, when you don't get to the blogs daily there is a lot to read! One of the fun things we did in Duluth was take a lunch cruise on Lake Superior and a tour of the harbor. We had a little rain shower at the start but it was a beautiful day for it. Here are a couple of photos from the trip. Jody, Swany, Kathy and Jan on the deck of the ship Shirley, DeLaura and Jody having dinner at The Top of the Harbor restaurant. Myself and 6 of my buddies are breezed into town on Wed. evening after about 12 hours on the road. We stopped along the way in Fargo for lunch and met up my sister for a quick visit. My friend Kathy's son also came by for a quick visit. We stopped at Bay Windows Quilts in Perham. I found some fabric for the outside border of one of my Mystery classes. Yesterday we spent at the quilt show. My Citrus Slices quilt won a second place ribbon in the Non-Traditional large quilts and Summer Time won an honorable mention. So a successful showing. I was lucky enough to meet Ann (snowplow) at the Superior booth and we spend an hour or so visiting and getting to know each other. It is so fun to be able to get to meet some of my online friends in person. TQS is such a great place to hang out! I spent the rest of yesterday checking out the vendors booths. I find that if I start reading a book I don't want to finish, so don't do it real often. It is that kind of weather here though, cold and rainy. I did get some things done the last couple of days though. I finished quilting a Serendipity quilt (from Sara Nephew's book) I am teaching a class this fall in Rapid City on these quilts and thought I should have another one actually quilted. The only one I have finished was my daughter's graduation quilt and I didn't think she would probably want to give it up for the class! So I am happy to have it finished. I wasn't sure about how to quilt those weird shaped triangle corners. But I decided to just dive in. I drew just the spine in using a flexicurve so that they were kind of the same shape in every corner and went from there. I also finished up two more basket blocks. That makes five of the twelve. I had started by machine appliqueing them, but ha... (read more)

05/31/2009: It was an absolutely beautiful day yesterday here in ND. Our weather guy calls it a "Goldilocks" day. Not too cold, not too hot, not too windy. So I decided to go along with the guys on a motorcycle ride. We went south and east of Alexander, first to Beach, ND. This is going down into cattle country on the edge of the ND Badlands. I made a quick run to their LQS, the Sip and Sew. It is a small shop with a coffee shop in it. I had not been there before so wanted to check it out. And the guys didn't whine too much about waiting for me. I told them I had to do one girl thing while along with the 5 guys! I didn't buy anything but it was nice to stop. Then we headed east to Medora, ND. This is at the entrance of the South Unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. A French nobleman the Marquis de Mores founded the town and named it after his wife Medora. Their chateau was built there in 1883 and is now a state historical monument. Theodore Roosevelt also lived in this area at the same t... I don't really know how to answer that question. Tonight as I was doing my thing I started thinking "Am I the only one this crazy?" As I was watching So You Think You Can Dance on television tonight, I would get up at each commercial and go to my machine and machine quilt until it came back on again! Those commercials are just way to long to sit through and I don't want to channel surf during them like my husband does. Anyway, I got the in-the-ditch quilting around two whole blocks and started on a third. Thankfully I can just leave my machine up and be ready to sew at a moments notice. I do this a lot when I want to watch TV but also get some piecing or quilting done. I also seem to bring quilting with me most places. In the car, on vacations, visiting my parents. I have completed many Grandmother's Flower Garden blocks just while driving to Helena to visit my son and his family. Plus did lots of it while the rest of the family w... I am working on quilting things in the ditch right now. Then will change over to the free motion for the fun part. I had to be content watching perfomances on YouTube yesterday of the American Idol Finale. Looks like a missed a great show! I will be ahead of the game! The mystery is Black and White plus One. Participants use black and white fabrics plus one other color. It will be fun to see it done up with the different colors. I also packaged up some quilts to send to Rapid City, SD. I am teaching at their retreat this fall and they wanted some samples of the classes to show next weekend at their quilt show. I have to get those in the mail today. My husband and I will be going to the cemetery today to bring flowers to Sean's grave. Instead of a needle and thread it had little circular discs that would stamp things on the fabric. This would have been in the late 80's or early 90's. Does anyone remember these machines? I can't remember what ever happened to it. I would love to find one like it for my grand-daughter but can't seem to find anything online. Has anyone seen anything like it out there? All the toy machines I could find online actually sew and Payge is not ready for that. Payge will be five but has mild cerebral palsy and won't be ready for a real machine for some time. She loves to play with all of my fabric scraps and if I am sewing trys to place them under the needle. Thanks for any help you can give me on this search. I just don't know where the time goes. Lots of ups and downs these past weeks. I have been working and teaching as usual. I haven't had much time to work on anything just for me. I did start quilting on my Swizzle Sticks quilt this morning. The 31st was a rough day. It was my son Sean's birthday. I can't believe it will be 10 years ago this summer that we lost him. He would have been 27 this year. I did pick up a cake after work and we remembered him that evening. My girls did great on their Feathered Stars in Medicine Lake, MT and their Lone Stars in Westby, MT. The Feathered Stars were out of Masha McCloskey's book. We used the bias square ruler and worked on the double feathered star block. The center star has 1/2" finished half-square triangles!! Good job ladies - I am proud of you all for persevering and making some great blocks. Here is a smilebox slideshow with some of their blocks. http://smilebox.com/playBlog/4f4455304e5455354f413d3d0d0... The Copper Thimble is a regular vendor at many of our quilt shows in this part of the country. Here is a site with a photo and some details on the fire. http://www.milescitystar.com/news/ We had heard they had some antique quilts on display at the time that were on loan from someone. What a tragedy for everyone involved! It does make me stop and think that I should probably document the quilts that I have sitting all over my house and maybe put a rider on my insurance policy for my quilts and machines. I designed a quilt for The Bent Pin to use the new Ain't No Bull fabric that we got into the store. I finished writing up the instructions yesterday. We have already sold two of the kits we made up and a guy came in and wants to buy the sample! You can tell it is cowboy country around here! Now I need to des...

03/21/2009: Good Morning, I thought some of you might be interested in a basketball update. The boys couldn't quite pull off the win on Thurs. They came back from behind but lost by 3 points to a really tough Linton team. They played 10 guys. Five would play for a couple and minutes and then they would send in a whole second five to play. The guys were pretty bummed out, but I guess the polls were right as they were ranked #1 all year and we were ranked #2. It was just too bad they had to play each other the first night. Yesterday they won their game in another nail biter by just one point. So today they are playing Consolation Championship this afternoon at 3:00. All the games played in the tournament have been great games. Close games and comebacks to win. One more day of games and then probably some shopping before heading home on Sunday. Reid needs to go and buy a baseball glove and shoes. I think they start baseball on Monday! This is the first year they will have a high school baseball team... We can already see the tops of the hills emerging from the snow. I had fun weekend in Minot at their quilt festival. I had 17 people take my Mystery class on Friday. I was so excited to finally be able to show everyone this quilt. I think it really turned out fun. I didn't have a name for it but at the Badlands Guild meeting it was suggested that I call it Swizel Stixs. I think it is going to stick as the name. Funny how having your meeting in the hotel lounge will bring a name like this into the mix!!! The colors in this photo are really off, but I don't have time this morning to take another one. I used the Metro Blue Goes Green fabrics to start with. Reid is off to Minot this morning to get ready for the big game tomorrow. They get to practice in the MSU Dome. We will be heading for the class B State Tournament next weekend!!!! We were behind at half-time by 6 points but the boys turned it on after that and won the game 77 - 63. Reid got to play a bit and scored a couple of points. He got another bucket but was fouled before the shot so it didn't count. He was in a photo in our local paper this week along with several of the other guys guarding the opposition so he is feeling pretty good about himself! I am off this morning for the quilt show in Minot, ND. I have to teach at 1:00 today. then I have tomorrow off and teach againg on Sunday. I think that I will probably be dragging a little bit. I don't think I got to bed until after 1:00. Here are a couple photos of Reid from the Monday night game. Can you tell I am a proud Mom? Well, basketball and quilting seem to be taking up all of my time lately. What a great way to spend my time! Reid has a big game tonight so I took a quick shot of him all dressed up. They have to wear shirts and ties to school the day of their games. Things will really get crazy when tournaments start in a couple of weeks. I will miss it when it is over - The school voted to have a high school baseball program and he is talking about going out for that. So my spring will be busy also! On Wed. I finally decided to just jump in and start quilting the feathers in the border of my quilt. I kept thinking I needed to mark something but just went for it and am happy with the results. I got 2 sides done before I ran out of thread! So that quilt is on hold until tomorrow. I will get to town and be able to get my threads today! If you would like to see more you can go to www.kumv.com and click on Sky-spies. So lots of changes in our schedules. Reid left on Sunday morning to go to Close-up in Bismarck. They were suposed to stay there and go to the legislature until Tues. afternoon. The rain started Monday morning so their teacher decided to head for home after lunch. It was a good thing they did. The roads were closed between here and Bismarck. My DH called from work and suggested I stay home yesterday as the roads were already getting bad. I spent the day machine quilting. School was canceled today so Reid was home. Also my DH had taken the day off to make sure he could make it to the big basketball game tonight (he had a few leftover vacation days he needs to use up) So thankfully he didn't have to drive to work this morning. But of course the basketball game was postponed until Friday. Luckily that is his regular day off. He spent most of the day using ... The solid red was just too much. So I took off the borders and my half circles from my leftover stacked fabrics. I must say I do like it better. One of the questions I get as a teacher is always "would you take it out and do it over?" My answer is always "can you live with it or not?" Everyone has their own level of "what they can live with". I guess this was one I couldn't live with. Reid's team lost their basketball game by 5 points yesterday and recieved 2nd place in the tournament. He wasn't too bummed. They played a really good team and they came back from being 13 behind so not so bad. Both are samples of my Stacked Circles pattern. The first is from a pretty floral fabric which is really not me, but I needed a sample to show that it works with soft fabrics too! I have had the blocks finished for about a year so it felt good to get them together. The second one is using a Valori Wells fabric that is just plain fun! All I needed to do was put the outside border on it. I am not sure I am totally sold on the border. Does it add to the quilt or distract? I may have to play a little more! I am thinking I should pull out several others UFOs and get on the ball. Today is our guild meeting in Williston which I will only get to part of the meeting. Reid has a basketball game at 2:30 so I will have to leave early. Seems like I never get to meetings anymore with my teaching schedule! So if I can only get to part of the meeting at least I tried. Have a good weekend everyone, Kathy

A little bit of rain here and there to add some excitement! I went to Williston yesterday before it hit and got a hair cut. I was planning on getting one the day I went in the ditch a week and a half ago and didn't want to have to cancel another appointment. I got home just as it started getting yucky. Oh, well, just more quilting time. I designed my Prairie Windmill pattern several years ago as a Mystery Class. Then printed up the pattern. It calls for two colorways of fabric, each shaded from dark to light with four fabrics. I had been thinking I should try one using the Shade Cascade fabrics designed by Karen Combs. Well, I book a class for the Prairie Windmill so figured it was time to try it. So here is my sample. I must be thinking spring with the color choices! My husband has been watching Mutiny on the Bounty this afternoon and I decided I would take a blizzard over a storm at sea! It makes me so sad to see what the... I didn't pay enough attention and didn't realize that the yardage given for the background fabric first in the supplies list didn't include fabric for the border. Unfortunately my LQS is out. If anyone would be out shopping and run across it I would love to hear from you. It is a Robert Kaufman fabric. It is the sampler quilt. I like how it turned out. I had originally thought I would would use a blue instead of the green, but am happy I changed my mind. I also took photos of my finished BOM blocks and put them on the Show and Tell page. I think I can probably make it to work tomorrow. I did get a lot accomplished by staying home the last couple of weeks! The bad weather isn't all bad! DH got the sewer system back in shape on Friday night so have been catching up on laundry and got to run the dishwasher! y dishwasher was one of the first things I bought with my "quilting" money from teaching because I really detest doing dishes. Probably because my sister and I had to do the dishes growing up. And there were never just a few dishes with all my family. Plus when you live on the farm it is meat and potatoes kinds of meals so lots of pots and pans. Happy quilting, Kathy

John has the Mystery Quilt spot set up in the Show and Tell section of the website, so if you have yours finished, be sure and add a photo. We have been having sewer problems the last couple of days and have been washing dishes in the tub! Not fun. DH thought he had it fixed this afternoon so I started using the dishwasher, but alas, it wasn't draining. I told him to just go to the bar and have a couple of drinks and work on it again tomorrow. He spent almost the whole day trying to get things working right. We have called several plumbers but no one has time to come and see us just now. So, back to the tub. Well, my plans for getting this last block fused before the New Year didn't happen until this morning. I went to town yesterday and bought groceries and by the time I got home my nose would not stop running. So didn't do anything for the rest of the day. So no going out last night to celebrate either! What a bummer. I feel a little better this morning but I am sure by this afternoon I will be feeling crumby again. I just finished getting all the stuff off the tree so DH and DS can get it taken down and put away today. DH shut the outside lights off this morning so back to normal around here soon. How is everyone doing on their Mystery Quilts? John had emailed me and is setting up a spot in the Show and Tell section of the site so you will be able to post photos there. Have a great day everyone. Again, Happy New Year to all my TQS friends! May it be filled with love and happiness. Kathy

With this weather I have been home a lot instead of working at The Bent Pin. I had other things I wanted to get too but needed fabric before I could continue so ended up working on my BOMs. I had 5 that I had not done. As of this morning I have 4 fused and ready to applique. If things work out today I will get to town to buy groceries plus be able to finish my last block. Then it will be a marathon to get them machine appliqued! We did end up having basketball games last night. The roads weren't great but definitely better than they have been. Reid played most of the JV game and about 1 1/2 min. in the varsity game. Watford City won both games so it was a successful evening. Keely was happy to able so see her little bro play ball. Sounds like there is a little break in the weather so she should be able to get home today. Happy New Year everyone, Kathy

Maybe today I can get the last three ready to stitch! With the weather like it is, it looks like Reid's basketball game will be cancelled again! My daughter is not a happy camper. She stayed to go to the game and now they won't have it, plus she hasn't been able to go out with friends or have anyone come over with this crumby weather. And who knows what the weather will be like tomorrow and the planned drive home! She is suposed to have a job interview on Thurs. We picked up our daughter who decided to wait and come with my sister Dori so she wasn't driving home alone on iffy roads. Yesterday I had 29 here for dinner at my house. Only the one brother couldn't make it out of the 8 of us. We of course ate way too much and there are plenty of leftovers for the next few days. DH and DS are starting to forget what I look like! Finally a day at home today. I have dishes in the dishwasher and am thinking of starting up the washing machine to get some clothes done. Otherwise it may just be the recliner this afternoon. But knowing me the sewing machine will be calling! I couple of weekends ago I actually had some days to myself, the guys were deer hunting, no classes to teach and I got to spend time at the machine. (Both guys got their deer so there is meat in the freezer!) I finished a top using the BOM blocks from our local Applique club's project from last year. I designed the block setting, the blocks are from EQ6. It is machine appliqued. For the outside border I put an 8" border of the dark blue and machine appliqued the very outside paisley fabric. I just cut freezer paper the lengths of the sides, folded it into equal sections and added the scallops. I then cut out the freezer paper shape and presse... I had good intentions, I had even brought along my laptop and files to Minneapolis but just couldn't find the time or energy to get them up. We got home Sunday night but it has been work and classes all week. So are you finished with your blocks and ready to put those blocks together? Sew together five rows of 4 blocks. Sew the five rows together. All we have left are the borders! Have a great Thanksgiving on Thurs. for those of you in the USA! Maybe you will have a long weekend and be able to sew! I finished Colleen's quilt Sun morning and was inspired to quilt a couple of small things. First I finished my quilt I started in Laura Wasilowski's class. Then went on and finished a little quilt from Laurie Martin's class. Laura's is all fused, even has a fused binding. Laurie just lays pieces onto the backing and batting, pins them in place and then quilts it down. You can see there is no binding and the flower petals go off the edge of the quilt. I starched the heck out of those petals so they will stay stiff. After those two pieces I am feeling kind of "artsy"! Anyway it will be a full week with my DS, his wife and girls coming on Wed. DD is coming on Thurs. Then all the family stuff for the weekend. My sister is not doing a traditional cake. She bought ... Last Thurs. I headed out for Medora, ND for the Badlands quilt retreat. What a fun weekend we had! Laura Wasilowski and Vi Colombe were our national teachers and they were great! I took Laura's friday class, Object Lessons. We played with fusing our own fabrics and then using them to cut out shapes for our art quilt. Mine is ready to machine quilt. I did some hand embroidery to add to the design. I taught 3 classes at the retreat also. First I did my Friday night mystery. Then on Sat. I taught my Citrus Slices pattern and on Sunday I taught Debbie Bowles Celebrate pattern. Friday evening Vi Colombe did our lecture and showed us many wonderful Lonestar quilts that she has done. Very inspiring. Then on Sat. evening Laura presented her lecture. We all laughed until we almost cried. She is a hoot. Sat. was also our banquet dinner. Our theme this year was the 50's and we could dress up for the occasion. There were lots of...
Let the Mystery Begin - Fabric Yardage

10/06/2008: Well, I have had quite a few positive replies to the idea of a Mystery Quilt. I will start by giving you the fabric yardages. Each week I will add a step to the mystery. I would start by choosing a Focus Fabric and then choose the other fabrics from there. The light background fabric does not have to be a white or cream color, as long as it is a light. I chose a light lavendar for my quilt. I used a focus that was a purple and gold kind of a paisley print. My light was lavendar, the dark was a dark purple and the bright was a gold color. I hope that helps a little. I taught three classes at the Indian Summer Quilt Show and Conference in Fargo, ND. I had a great time. I won some ribbons and the Excellence in Applique award in the show. I taught the 4-Patch Posie in the BQ setting, my pattern Sunscape/Moonscape and Free-Form Feathers. We also had a bridal shower for my sister on Sat. evening. I got to shop a little bit on Sunday afternoon and bought an outfit for the wedding for myself and Keely (DD) got shoes and a dress for under $50. We drove back on Monday. I brought Mom back home instead of Dad meeting us so that I could see my Aunt and Uncle that were stopping through from Seattle. DH and DS joined us for supper after DH got home from work so didn't get home til after 10:00. Back to work on Monday - Wed. and taught a class on Thurs. in Medicine Lake, MT. I actuall got to stay home on Friday and got started quilting on the wedding quilt. Plus I ... I have been kind of nagging him for a while! But all it took was having open gym this morning and the thought of what the basketball coach would think of the long hair and he was asking for a haircut. Shows you who's opinion rates higher. He took his own photos of himself before and after. He will not be happy if he finds out I posted these photos - but oh well!!! The haircut also got rid of most of the bleached blonde he thought he just had to have. Back to that pretty red. Before After I got my blocks sewn together with the 4-Patch blocks I posted the other day. I just need to add a border around it. We start a new year of applique club tonight at the store. We are deciding what project we want to tackle for the year. I usually lead the group but I am going to try and talk eveyone into taking one of the months and getting the sample block done for that month. Then I won't have to feel pressured to get one... My hubby's sister came along with us today. We had a fun day out. Val and I graduated from high school together in our big class of 28 kids so have been friends since the 6th grade. We ate out twice today, once for lunch and again for dinner. I didn't buy anything exciting. Did get a new kitchen garbage can - how exciting is that? And a new fall wreath to hang by my front door. Now it is time to kick back in the recliner - after changing into those nice sweat pants! Kathy

After having some coffee this morning I tackled the rest and finished June and July blocks. Only two behind now!! I also machine appliqued a Steppin' Out Santa yesterday. I designed this guy quite a few years ago and have had several requests to teach it again. So here is my latest version. I have to add some dimensional holly leaves to Santa's crook and then decide what to do for some borders. The only example that I had left here at home was him in the center of my Christmas Sampler quilt that I use each year on my bed at Christmas. So one more thing done that needed to get done. I did some quilting on a wall hanging off and on the past week or so. I am teaching a free-form feather class in a couple of weeks and needed to have a good example of something finished. The feather quilting is done in the background and borders and now I just have to quilt in the circles. My DH wan... I was just happy they could save all my patterns, photos, instructions, supplies lists, ect. that I didn't even think of that. Oh, well, all that downloaded music was what actually caused the problems anyway! I have been playing with a new 4-Patch Posie and the BQ setting. I found some great African themed fabric on my Red Lodge trip and made the blocks there. So I spent this morning putting the BQ setting part together. I love it! Right now it is a 58" square so I will need to stack the other half of my fabric if I want to make it bigger. I will probably do that tonight while watching TV. I got one close-up photo of a block before the battery went dead on my camera. If I get around to it I will take some more later and post them. Fall is here ...
Old Settlers Weekend in Alexander, ND

08/31/2008: Well, the 63rd annual Old Settlers Weekend is over here in Alexander. 63 years ago one of the local farmers said they should have a harvest celebration and he would provide the beef for a feed. It all starts on Thurs. night with a bonfire to cook the meat in on Friday. We went down for a couple of drinks at our little bar in town. They had deep-fried a couple of turkeys and made corn on the cob. We walked across the park and watched the teenage guys playing football under the lights in the park. I don't know how they were doing it as I am sure they couldn't even really see the ball! Then over to watch the fire for a while. On Friday morning I baked four pies for the PTO pie booth. All families who have kids in school are asked to bring 3 pies. I always make at least one extra to leave at home! DH went down to help prepare the beef. He is one of the guys that chops onions for the 1300 pounds they prepare. They cut the beef into chunks, add salt, pepper and onions. Then it gets wrapped...

08/28/2008: Good Morning everyone. I hope everyone is having a great day. I am home today and hope to get some sewing done. This summer I have been working 3 days a week instead of 2 and it sures seems to cut down on my sewing time! I think I just miss that Mondy at home all alone. My hubby has Friday and Sat. off and works on Sunday so now I only or have Thurs. at home alone for most of the day while Reid is in school. We averted disaster on Sat. DS was downstairs trying to play XBox online and came upstairs because it wasn't working right. He checked the computer upstairs and noticed that the wall was hot beside the light switch. DH checked it out and we were pretty close to having a fire in the wall! Lots of heat and blackened wires in the light switch. So we were lucky it was during the day and not the middle of the night! DH has been replacing light switches around the house this week. The bad news is my computer isn't working. I will have to try to find something out about either fixing it... I had a wonderful weekend with my quilting girlfriends in Redlodge, MT. I got all the paper piecing done on the Fickle Pickle pattern. I will be teaching it later this fall so needed to get my sample done. I also stacked and cut some new 4-Patch Posie blocks with some great African feel fabric. I can't seem to find my camera so didn't get any photos while there. I am waiting on my friends to send me some. On Monday I took a class from Laurie Martin from Washington state. Very fun, free form, raw edge applique. My piece is ready to start the quilting on. She also showed quite a few embellishment techniques that will be fun to use. I worked yesterday and taught a class last night. Then had to head for Wal-Mart and pick up a few things so Reid could start school today. I don't know why ND starts so early, but they are going to be sweating in the classrooms today. High of 97 is expected and with no airconditioning it won't be fun I am sure. Sounds like w... I just finished preparing and fusing all the pieces and I feel like I have been in a marathon I just have the circles left to do and I will wait with them until I am at the store tomorrow and can cut them with the Accu-Cut. It is the best way to make perfect circles! I am three blocks behind so did the June block first this morning. Then July and am looking at doing August this afternoon. I thought if I had them all fused I could take them on my quilting weekend and blanket stitch every once in a while. I made one boo-boo. I didn't realize I had transferred some pencil marks to my iron. I pressed my background block into quarters and there is some on my block. I really didn't notice until most of the block was fused so I am not starting over!!! I will just have to deal with the pencil marks. I took a photos of my sister's top for her wedding quilt that I finished piecing earlier this week.... This is one of my local guilds I belong to, so it is always fun when spending time with friends. I had a wide array of quilting experience in the group, from beginner to expert. There are going to be some really great quilts when they are done. I let each student choose which quilt they wanted to make from Judy Martin's Log Cabin Quilt book. Below are some photos of the projects that were started. I had 15 in the class so this is just a sampling. I tried to do the roll-over but couldn't get it to work this morning - gremlins I guess! I just watched the new TQS show and am so excited. Laura Wasilowski is coming to our retreat in Medora, ND the second weekend in Oct. Because I drove I have plenty of room in the van to bring tons of quilts along Now comes the job of putting everything away! Yuck. Because I was so close to Mitchell, SD I went early and visited with my good friend Debbie. We had a fun time going to Mama Mia one night. The movie was very fun. Last year at our retreat we made fabric bingo cards and played bingo with them for fat quarter prized. Each row had to have certain colors like red and pink, green, blue, ect. They also had lists of fabric types, like polka dots, batiks, flowers, metallics, plaid, leaves, stars and the list went on. So when playing bingo they would call a color and a fabric type like green batik. Anyway when we were done playing some people just wanted to toss the blocks. I volunteered to design a quilt using them for this years raffle. Then at our January sleepover we worked together and finished the top except for the applique border. Kris Jacobson took it home to finish the applique. Debbie Hendickson did the machine quilting and Janet McCabe put on the binding. We will be drawing for it at this year's retreat in Oct. For blocks that some wanted to just toss I think we ... (read more)

Thanks Bridget for the instructions. The first photo is of my Indian Orange Peel that won a 2nd place ribbon at the NAQ show and the second is my Heartland Album quilt that won a 3rd place award. I have gotten a little bit of sewing done while the kids have been here. I finished up a few more blocks and have enough Snake River log cabin blocks to complete the twin size. I am crazy, but think I am going to make 16 more blocks to make the queen size version. It is in my fall colors that I love so I would like to have it on my bed! I am teaching a class on making the log cabin blocks from Judy Martin's new book the first weekend of Aug. so I want to get the top finished. I also have one started with batiks. I am thinking I want to make a few more blocks for that one also. I will leave those as individual blocks to I can demo the many different setting that can be done with the log cabin. Well, I am off to the sew... (read more)

My kids are all home and I have been cooking up a storm. We had 30 family members here for the 4th and celebrated Payge's 4th birthday a couple days after the real one! I am posting a photo of the water feature that is closer to being completed! Lots of finessing to do yet but Robert had it up and running for the 4th. My sister's boyfriend took a photo of his daughter beside the "upper falls"!

Minnesota Adventure

06/29/2008: Good Morning everyone, I am sitting at my sister's in Casselton this morning after our quick trip to the Minnesota Quilt Show and more. Robert and I took off Thurs morning for her house. We spent a little time in Bismarck on the way. He stopped off at the Harley dealer just to look at the bikes. Then I was looking for a new antenna for my xm radio. Well, for $10 more I could buy a whole new radio! So I am thinking over what to do there. I do so much driving for my quilt teaching that I do enjoy my xm radio, especially that 70's station!! I also bought a new pair of Bjorn sandals for all that time on my feet. We arrived at my sister's in the early evening. Their local John Deere dealer was celebrating 40 years in the business with a pork dinner and street dance that evening. It was a really fun band and great food so was a very enjoyable evening. We set out for Rochester bright and early at 6:30 friday morning. We started out driving in the rain but it turned into a bright and wonderfu... Well, I decided not to just sit in my chair when I got home last night like I did on Monday. Took the border I didn't like off the commission quilt and got choice #2 sewn on. Yippee, I can call Gladys and get them passed along to the machine quilter. The first photo is of the store sample she originally bought. The next two are the ones she begged me to make for her other two grand-daughters. Of course we didn't have the perfect fabrics, but I think they turned out OK. We don't carry a whole lot of Civil War fabrics. They are all a little different in size because I worked around the stripe fabrics and what width they were. Then I thought you might like to see a little bit of the new classroom we are working on in the building next door to The Bent Pin. The archway connecting the two stores is finished but has been boarded up until we are finished with the renovation next door. These are old brick buildings in downtown Williston that are side-by-side. They had to break...
weekend accomplishments

06/24/2008: Wow! Look at all the choices we have for writing our blogs now - do you supose my little mention of how to change the font and font size caused all that! Thanks so much TQS. I spent lots of time at the machine this weekend. I am teaching a log cabin class the first weekend in Aug. so got back to finish piecing on my Snake River Canyon quilt from Judy Martin's book. I did the center 16 blocks a few months ago and had not gotten back to it. I finished 20 blocks over the weekend so only 12 left. Of course then we get to the border which is all pieced also, but will face that when I get there. I also almost finished the commission quilt tops I have been working on. I just had the final border on one left to do. Unfortunately, I did not like the outside border fabric so went looking for something different at work yesterday. I found something I like but it means taking off the small first border I had already sewn on. Bummer. Maybe I will take it along with me to the MN show and take the b...
wedding and baby

06/20/2008: Well, just when I think I can get back to some of my UFO projects and really get something done I get interruptions. My baby sister (26 years younger that I) called and she got engaged on Sat. So guess what I will be working on - a wedding quilt. I need to sit down and decide what pattern I am going to use or if I want to design something original. The wedding date is Oct. 25th. So a few months to get busy on it. I also need to get cracking on a baby quilt for my niece Ali. She is due in Sept. so time if flying by. I am debating about making a trip to the MN quilt show next weekend. I talked to my other sister and she thought it would be a fun trip for my hubby and I, and her and her boyfriend. I have not been on an "adult" trip in years! I should clarify that - and adult trip with my husband. Seems like I have been to lots of quilt shows! LOL I don't know if I can handle it! But we are checking out about getting everyone's schedules worked out. I was lined up to teach a class next Sat...

06/18/2008: Hi everyone, Just wanted to try out the suggestion that I got from SDQuilter for changing the font and size of font for the blogs. She said that she writes her blog in MSWord, then hits copy and paste for the blog. Woo-Hoo, it works! To do this you will want to hi-light the words typed in Word, then hold down the control key and hit the letter C. Then go to the blog and click on your blog so the curser is there and flashing. Hold down the control key and hit the letter V. Worked like a charm. Thanks Linda, Kathy
