What a great article! Thank you so much for researching this bit of history and making it interesting and informative with your writing. I'm thrilled that I don't need to soak cloth in sheep dung and rancid olive oil to be able to have beautiful red fabric! But knowing its origin makes me all the more thankful!

I agree, hard to focus on anything. The plain ole "Smilebox" slides work better for me. I must have got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, because I think most of that stuff is just plain ugly and weird. And I don't consider myself a traditional quilter by any means. Am I supposed to keep negative opinions to myself?

Thank you for the lovely insight about your article. Three years ago, I had complete mental breakdown and was hospitalized. Afterwards I was seeing a therapist for a few years. One of the very first things he had asked was "What are your favorite hobbies?" I figured it was for common ground conversation and stated that I enjoy quilting. But after reading your article I now understand the question. That day my therapist wrote a prescription for me to give to my hubby, which stated that I needed to continue with my quilting and to ask for my family support regarding my quilting. Your article has helped my understand why my quilting and holding down a job a connected. Thank you and I will use this insight with my children during their rough time and get them quilting, beading or any crafts to help them out. Big Hugs and Prays go out to you. Skibow

Yes, Marie Webster's original book "Quilts: Their Story and How to Make Them" (first published in 1915 and republished many times until the 1940s) is available thru the Gutenberg Google site. However, Maries granddaughter Rosalind Webster Perry did reprint the book in 1991 and added a chapter about Marie herself, plus extra photos. I highly rcommend you add THIS book to your bookshelf as well. Just google The Quilters Hall of Fame and visit their museum shop. Karen Alexander, former President of TQHF

Marie Webster and Ruby McKim were terrific ladies way ahead of their time. I was luck enough to find the original paper cut-out patterns for the Flower Garden Quilt and have each of them in a plastic sheath. One of the classes at our local quilt shop is embroidering these flowers as I write. We have about 6 more to go. I also have the paper cut-out patterns of the State Flowers and a partially complete embroidered set that someone started MANY years ago. There are only 5 or 6 to complete. Both of these patterns appeared in the 20's and 30's in a central IL newspaper somewhere near Champaign or Danville IL. As for Marie Websters quilts, she got a lot of beauty from her quilts with only solid fabric. I have just reproduced the Gay Garden from her book. Turned out very pretty. I would encourage anyone to make a solid fabric quilt if you haven't done it - there is something very soothing and uncomplicated about it.

This quilt just blew me away! It has a Norman Rockwell-ish feel to it but more than that it speaks to the memory of a grandmother passing on her legacy. I can't even put into words all the emotions it brings up -- with a wallop! Absolutely stunning in it's detail.

You are correct, Susan. Thorton Burgess did not create the "original" Peter Rabbit but he did create his own stories about Peter and other animal characters and was very famous for them. Ruby McKim created her own artistic version of his characters for the series they did together. Here are some of the stories Burgess wrote. http://www.2020site.org/child_calendar/ Karen Alexander

I am delighted to know that I share a birthday with a famous quilting pioneer-----could it be a good omen for the future of my quilting endeavours? However there are some errors in your article. Beatrix Potter created Peter Rabbit and many other children's book characters. You mistakenly credited Peter Rabbit to Thornton Burgess.

This is a fascinating article to me. I am making Ruby's Flower Garden Quilt in a monthly club at our local quilt shop. I have 15 of the embroidered block completed with 8 more to go before the end of the year. She had a enviable talent.

Books like Merikay's are just as important as the quilts themselves. Every quilt tells a story and we should all be able to know the story! Her Civil War book was absolutely wonderful. I'll have to buy the Tennessee book!

Pam, I watched your video, Monet's Garden with facination--five times! I love your combination of photography and quilting as well as the Bach background! I too take a lot of photographs and paint in watercolor. I am in the process of doing an art quilt of a peony. I would love to know what kinds of quilting thread and fabrics you use. Do you paint on your quilts? Have you written a book? piscesgirl

Pam has again produced some very evocative images of an amazing country. How fortunate she is to be able to travel to the most amazing parts of the world absorbing the culture and beauty of each country. And even more fortunate to be able to teach and learn in these circumstances. I'm sure the learning is a two-sided affair with both the teacher and students all the richer for the experience.

This is a great article. Is there someway I can print this and take it to my nursing homes? I am a long term care Ombudsman and am always trying to get the nursing home staff to understand that residents need to do something! Watching tv is boring and doesn't give the residents a sense of accomplishment. Thank you! geneva

What was said that caused these women to break into song? I simply had to get out of my chair and dance with them today. Does this spontaneous kind of thing happen all the time? Oh, I must tell my quilt group about this video and get them on their feet dancing and singing!! Karen in the San Juan Islands

Thank you for this video! I am headed to Nakuru Kenya 2-25-09 to stay at a school for 2 weeks. My husband's foundation "The Global Teacher Foundation" will be working with the teachers of the 600 mostly orphaned students to become better teachers. I will be teaching available parents/guardians or anyone else to sew. I have put together patterns and instructions to make various sized bags and small art type lapel pins. I will assist them in finding the fabrics, buttons, etc and a place to market the items. I'm very excited! I'm taking lots and lots of sewing supplies as donations to help them get started. Wish me luck! Geneva Carroll

This video has brought the sun of Africa to a winter's day in England! I spent a year in the Cape with my husband in 2000/01 and it brought back happy memories. There is joy in Africa and they are all happy to share the love of their country with everyone. Will have to watch the video again (without crying this time!)
