| Marie Webster and Ruby McKim were terrific ladies way ahead of their time. I was luck enough to find the original paper cut-out patterns for the Flower Garden Quilt and have each of them in a plastic sheath. One of the classes at our local quilt shop is embroidering these flowers as I write. We have about 6 more to go. I also have the paper cut-out patterns of the State Flowers and a partially complete embroidered set that someone started MANY years ago. There are only 5 or 6 to complete. Both of these patterns appeared in the 20's and 30's in a central IL newspaper somewhere near Champaign or Danville IL. As for Marie Websters quilts, she got a lot of beauty from her quilts with only solid fabric. I have just reproduced the Gay Garden from her book. Turned out very pretty. I would encourage anyone to make a solid fabric quilt if you haven't done it - there is something very soothing and uncomplicated about it. |
