Currently I have about 30+ rulers. The larger ones are stored in a large (custom) shallow drawer, and the smaller ones vertically in a small "milk crate" plastic box. I strongly dislike the yellow lined rulers. The fat yellow color is most distracting to me. I prefer clear, unfrosted, with fine black lines. I also strictly avoid those with large logos or instructions. Inevitably, those logos are just where you don't want them. I also find a long lipped ruler perfect for longer strips. The invisigrip product works incredibly well to avoid slippage. I have many cutting boards and have found that I very much prefer the colorless translucent type. The added bright colors of some mats is distracting to making fine color choices and adds much to the visual clutter of a sewing space when you want, indeed, need the fabric colors to take prominance.

Loved the idea of using 3 mats together and turning over a worn mat to use the back side. Great tips!

Jan, I just went out an bought the giant rotary cutter. The older I get, the less I think know and the more I appreciate the wisdom of others. Thanks. Beth

I often have friends who want to learn to quilt. Watching your videos about rotary cutting, rulers, and mats reminds me to make sure when I am teaching them that I make the effort to give them the basics before they begin a quilt. Thanks for reminding me to teach what has become second nature to me.

I agree with bettyannseeman, even when you've been quilting a very long time, a refresher course on the things you've "known forever" is a good thing. I have 're-learned" lot's of things!

Even though I've been quilting for about 20 years I still find these classes full of great information. Thanks

Jan, I have loved watching you primer on the "tools of the trade". I live in Searsport and have seen your name on emails from the Belfast quilt guild. Now I have "met" you on TQS. These instructional videos are so so helpful and although I have been sewing a LONG time, there is always something new to learn. I especially loved the three piece traveling cutting mat - how clever. I had to smile when you mentioned the larger the rotary cutter blade the less frequently it needs to be changed - a very Maine idea. That will be my next purchase. I look forward to new videos from your wealth of knowledge and experience. Beth

Jan, you are a font of information. That foldable travel mat is a great idea - even for use in classes when you don't want to lug a large mat with you to class.

I am so thrilled with this series of classes - Back to the very basic information. We quilters who have been quilting for a long time forget that things we consider second nature had to be taught to us at some time. I applaud your effort Jan, You Go Girl !!!! Betty Ann In Fl.
