My daughter has no interest in sewing at all I gave her a machine a few years ago and she never used it. Her best friend came over one day and said she visits this woman who lets her use a sewing machine to make herself a quilt and it was pretty good for a 17 year old. My daughter said would you be crushed if I gave the machine to my friend I said not at all at least it will be loved. So now she is sewing like crazy when she can afford some fabric. Love to see young people wanting to quilt! Cher |

I'm never too shy even if I start to learn something new. I think more of the need I have at the moment and at that time my daugther's bed needed something to get covered with =) |

A lady a church was going to teach us to quilt. Well, I went, got hooked, never finished it, so on, so on.... Then, I did it again. Went to a church meeting to make a Bible Block quilt. I thought how meaningful that would be. Well, it was a sampler, some of the 9" blocks had 60-70 pieces. What were we thinking, I ask you? Any way, I did finish that one and it is a prize. Not for the work, but for the memories. This is one my two boys will fight over when I'm dead. So, I'll just have to make another similar one in meaning. It's all about the experience and fun - and that'a a good thing. |

It was a simple rail fence but I incorporated his name, Chris, across the top. IT WAS ALL IN POLYESTER! I must ask him if he still has it! |

When we moved to Auburn, CA in 1984, I joined the local quilt guild, at the first meeting I went to they had kits for doing an applique butterfly, so I took one and for the next month challenged myself in doing the applique, I tried one, doing machine applique, and it was a disaster, then I did a second one "sort of needle turn" and I liked it a lot better. Well at the next months meeting I turned it in and I won all the blocks. I think that there were 21 or 22 of them. They also gave me the leftover kits in case I wanted to make more. I set the blocks with alternate plain blocks. Then hand quilted it, not knowing any better, I used a heavy polyester batting. It took a long time to get it quilted. I quilted a butterfly outline on the plain blocks too. I will post a picture on my profile page. Margarita in Auburn, CA |

My grandmother gave me the blocks when I was about 15 years old and I couldn't have cared less. Later, after grandma and her sisters were gone I finished it (with polyester!). I wish I would have paid attention to grandma and her sisters because I could have learned so much. I still use her quilting hoop. |

My second quilt was a full-sized Lone Star (Star of Bethlehem, Eight pointed Star, goes by many names). No one told me "Y" seams and bias edges for all of those diamonds was hard to do. Maybe that is why I do not have trouble with either today. Start with something you want to do and learn from there. |

I was working at House of Fabrics after school in high school when I first got introduced to quilting through Eleanor Burns' original Quilt in a Day log cabin book. I bought it and made the blocks but never sewed them together. A few years later I got the Star Snowball book and went crazy! I made about 4 quilts for different people but the first one was mine! A peach and green one for my bed at my parents house and I have been quilting ever since. We have no shortage of blankets at our house. |

My first project in 1996 was a set of 6 place mats, then I jumped to a queen sized pattern "Rocky Road to CA" with what seemed like thousands of little 2 1/2" squares. I finally finished it and even quilted it on my only machine at the time--a Singer 928K I had received as a gift in 1961. What a job that was! I gave it to my son and DIL. Mary Anne |

I sewed all the strips together in Quilt-in-a-Day style, and my grandma and I tied it with embroidery floss. My second quilt (first hand pieced completely - even the borders, and hand quilted) was a sampler of blocks and is king-size! Most of my quilts have been larger ones, mainly because my dh thinks the table-toppers and wall-hangings are useless :) I don't mind, as long as he lets me quilt. My current project is a king size double nine patch with 1" pieces ;) |

I had been a garment sewer since the age of 11 and was walking past a quilt shop in the late 70's in Cambridge, MA and saw this beautiful blue and white quilt in the window. I walked in and told the woman I wanted "that fabric" for "that quilt." I had not a CLUE as to how to make a quilt nor how to quilt one. My garment sewing served me well as I was able to piece it without any problems but I knew my old Touch & Sew Singer would never get it quilted, so I tied it. I gave it to someone as a wedding present and noticed on my first visit to their house that they had taken it out of storage and put it on their bed for my visit as the fold marks were still very visible. I have to wonder where it is today. I wish I had continued quilting though because I would be a lot better at it today than I am. |

It took me a whole year to finish it. Learned alot. Walmart fabric, machine quilted diagonally in 36" squares ala Georgia Bonesteel and hand quilted the outer borders. Turned the back up for the binding. But it has been on my bed since 1998 and we love it. |

I did mostly machine applique and machine quilting using Georgia Bonesteel's quilt as you go lap quilting technique and my own designs. I didn't start making lap size quilts until about 10 years ago and now do very little applique, mostly precision piecing. |

The pieces were traced around a cardboard template with a pencil and cut out with scissors. The batting was purchased from the Sears catalog and was a fat fluffly polyester. It was backed with a twin sheet and tied together with polyester yarn. Three fabrics were used. Back then I could only put together two prints and a solid. The colors were rust, cream and browns. I didn't know how to do a binding so I sewed the back to the front leaving an opening, turned right side out and stuffed the batting in, then sewed it closed and tied it. I loved that quilt to death! |

I have been quilting for a while now but I just recently made a full size quilt. It was a crazy nine patch. I have done lap size quilts also. I guess I was just nervous about doing a large quilt. I would love to make one for my king size bed. I need to master machine quilting first. That is my next big challenge. Alex, if you can't get Adair to be a quilter you are recruiting her friends. I love it! |

It was tied and had 2 big fluffy polyester battings in it. That's how I learned that the heavier the quilting the longer your quilt lasts. I used bargain fabrics in that quilt and it was pretty worn out in about 6 years. (kids & dogs back then, probably 1995) |

Took forever, finally had to have my mother (a life long quilter) help me finish the quilting before I moved an hour away (because I knew I'd never get it finished). What great memories I have of quilting with her for hours to complete the project. She took the leftover pieces and made pillow shams for me, what a great surprise. Then several years later when my first grandchild was born, she made a Crib size "Trip Around the World" quilt for Meghan, her great-granddaughter. |

I used the laser and a pantograph, but had a lot of trouble matching the rows. by the time i got half way I was sick of the laser. I finished it freehand with the same patern, which I had had a fair bit of practice on, having traced it more than fifty times! and I've been freehand ever since, except for marking lines for wholecloth medallions. It's what started my love of quilting designs. Now, I need to move to finer thread so I can do really small stuff. I am in love with tiny fillers. Yes!!! Vicki |

Each diamond was traced with a cardboard template and cut out with scissors. Took me over a year to complete. I put a label on the back dedicating the quilt to my husband which said "To Charlie - with all my love in every stitch". Even the label was hand embroidered in counted cross stitch! We used to joke that if we every got divorced, we would fight over the quilt, not the kids! Happy to say, 30 years later, we're still mad about each other! |
