I have more than my fingers and toes and including a lot of yours. I just have some days when I want to start something new. I have some days where I just want to sew and I have some days that I just want to finish. Having many UFO's allow you to be flexible in choosing what you want to work on each day.

I have many UFOs. The funny thing is I work for an organization who receives a lot of donations. You know, people cleaning out their UFOs and fabric. Since I am the only quilter among the group guess who gets to take all the UFOs and fabric I like. My current project is making my daughter's wedding dress (wedding is March 27), so all the quilting UFOs have been put to the side but not forgotten. My oldest UFO is from my great grandmother. I also have a log cabin quilt I started when my daughter was in seventh grade. That was 18 years ago. I have several BOMs, and it goes on and on. My latest acquisition from work is a yarn ball with 320 yards of yarn. Who knows how many projects are in it. Does that count as a UFO? I love it, so you might say I am a UFO collector. :-) Cindy, OK

Up until very recently, I had no UFO's. I would finish each one before going to the next. But I was new to quilting, and it soon caught up to me. I like to work on a few different projects at one time, because it's more fun that way. However, as of last week, I stopped in my tracks and made sure I went back to finish each item I had started. These projects consist of 2 quilts for Project Linus, and two other tops I made in classes. I'm working on a very spontaneous art quilt, and it was important that I clear all of these unfinished projects, so I can have a clear head, and allow my inspiration to flow.

Is this a funny question or what? :) I think I have heard the terms and seen the letters somewhere but not sure where! Anyway, I knew that I had many many projects and WIPs does sound better although they are mostly UFOs. When I moved 5 months ago I realized (and so did my helpers) how many things I really have started and still need to finish. Not only quilting related things but also cross stitch too. If I had to count I would make myself a nervous wreck and I know once I have my sewing room again I will be trying to eliminate more. I would like to also count the ones in my head that I have seen in so many of my books but those I know have no hope of getting anywhere. So I guess the answer is really to get in gear Mary or get rid of Mary. This was a great question! Thanks. Mary Noel

Are you kidding? My oldest UFO is from 1973. It's a dotted Swiss polyester blouse with princess seams. I was 14 when I started it, so there doesn't seem to be much point in finishing it now! I have at least two dozen garment UFOs, and probably 40 or 50 quilting UFOs. The oldest quilting UFO is from 1992 and it's my mother's fault. It would be nice to think I'll finish them all someday, but with age I've learned to stop lying to myself. ;) Anne in Vancouver, Canada

40, 50, ...... could be 70 or more. I don't count and they are not UFOs, they are WIPs (Works in Progress). Whenever I feel like it I start something new. Everything gets finished - eventually. If I don't feel like appliqué, I get out some piecing. If I'm fed-up working with reds, I starts a new project in blues. I love all my WIPs! Lorchen

my guild started a UFO small group last Feb where we meet at work on our UFO's. I think we are up to 5 small UFO groups now. Last year I finished up probably 10 that were almost finished. I gave away those that I don't intend to finish. I still have left 8 projects in my "Ongoing" category, 9 kits I have not started work on, 15 projects started and plan to finish at some point. Working on these is giving me a much better sense of how much time it takes me to do something. And it feels great to finish one, but I still start an occasional new project. But, now I have a better idea of what is involved when I choose to do so.

I have too many to count! And I just ordered the BOM kit for Star Crazy - call me CRAZY. I intend to finish them all, hopefully in this lifetime ;). A friend in my sewing group calls me a great starter, meaning I'm not a great finisher. One of these days, I will have to bite the bullet and donate some of them, but I'm not there yet.

I have had such fun reading these, and yes I have about 17 UFO's, also have about 8 designed on my EQ6 but not started, also about 5 sets of fabric waiting to be cut, also to many to count with the patterns I lovingly pick up and look at but have not bought any fabric yet. What fun is this I say, but I have to point out that I have one good point and that is I am a tidy person....yeah I know what a pain.....so that all of my projects are neatly arranged in draws all very ready for me to pick up and start again so I dont have any excuse at all....oh well ONE DAY!!!!! I have between 10 and 20 depending in if you are counting those already started or just purchased and planned. Another 6 or so waiting to be quilted. And impossible to count all the ones dreamed of doing. Only one more border to attach and the 2009 BOM will move to the waiting to be quilted pile :-)

I am in awe of those who only start one thing at a time and finish it!! Having been quilting for about 30 years and doing other needle work for an additional 30, I have found a number (HA) of UFO's. My goal this year is to finish maybe a half dozen. That might make a small dent! My quilt guild has an auction every year that usually contains quite a number of UFO's or quilt kits that members have decided they can't or won't finish - I don't even go to that to be tempted. Having recently reorganized my fabrics I have decided that any "new" projects will be some type of scrap quilt. That should keep me busy into my 90's or beyond! (I will buy backing, setting or border fabric if needed). Wish me luck! Rosemarie in NH

I only have one project that is really a UFO. It's a machine embroidery quilt that my Nana and sister started not long before my Nana died. The blocks were all different sizes and really badly warped because my sis washed them and put them in the dryer, after they put the embroidery on them. I have pressed them and squared them up and now I just have get them all to go together somehow. I have 4 other quilts in the works but don't consider them UFO's as I am slowly working on all of them. Ruth, Geelong, Aust.

One project at the time, my O.C.D. has taken over my sewing studio :-P The UFO’s that I may accumulated have come from incomplet block exchanges, but then they become “Charity Quilt”. However, I have Cherrywood Fabric that I purchased at the Houston Show in 2007 that I am still contemplating—I just can’t cut that fabric. Also, I have one storage box with leftover fabric. Avid traveler, my quilting stuff must fit in a 20” x 12” tote bag. Everything I do is by hand. At this time, I am working on my "Sylvia Bridal Sampler" and I need to complete it by November 10, 2010. No time to work on anything else really! “Life is Good” ViVi L’Amour

I have quite a lot of ufos and usually need a deadline to finish some of them. I do intend to quilt them all eventually and as our group makes community quilts, more & more will be donated. I get inspired easily and start more projects! Re. your initial enquiry, surely no one will be taking them apart to reuse? I'd find that a waste of time & would rather give them away to someone who would want them.

If you count the quilts I have thought of but never sketched out, the quilts I've sketched but never started... I have millions of UFO's. However, IF you think of the project by the challenge set for you to achieve, many projects are DONE even though it may only look like an unfinished quilt... then only a couple of projects are true UFO's.

I have 3 tops to be quilted and at least 5 unfinished BOMs. I don't include the 2 BOMs that I'm working on now in my UFOs. I really enjoy going to the quilt shop to participate in the BOMs, but the thought of hand quilting all those tops became overwhelming, so I bought a long arm last summer. I'm still learning to use my long arm, and have completed 2 tops on it so far. I'm trying to limit new projects so I can finish those already started, but some times I get an idea and just can't resist starting something new.

About once a year I go through my stash and my UFOs and do a reality check. Will I use this or finish this in 6 months. I group the pieced pieces together by size. Then group the cut pieces together by size. Make bags together with these grouped pieces and any fabric I don't believe I will use and make a big goodie bag for Linus Quilts. This way they can use the bags as kits and set up projects that work for them better. They are always happy to receive even small cut pieces. The fabric goes to a great cause. No waste!

I actually only have one UFO - which is on a top shelf of my closet and I don't particularly like. I usually finish every quilt I start. Right now I have four in various stages (the two BOM's from this site, another that is in the quilting stage, and the fourth that's just beginning. These four are set to be presents when my grandchildren get married (they are all in their teen's). By that time I will probably have others finished to choose from. Jan

These days I usually work on one quilt at a time, and complete it. I like to design my own quilts, and work through the complete process. I do have some incomplete past projects: my first quilt top, which I pieced when I was 16, I haven't sandwiched and quilted. I didn't like the way it looked after piecing - so someday, I may return to it and see if I can "fix" it. I also have an embroidered stamped quilt top that I purchased, and I embroidered quite a bit of it, then put it away, when I started working on my own designs. I still plan to go back to it one day. I do have a 2 or 3 incomplete attempts at quilting that I imagine will find their way to the thrift store one day! Denise L.

At least 50. Recently I have been trying to work on completing what I have as my DH has stated that anything that isn't completed is being donated. The donation doesn't bother me, but his definition of completed does. Bindings are my downfall! I do interrupt the process now and again to work on quilt tops for Lutheran World Relif quilts and pillowcases and premie quilts for the children's hospital. This last interruption has lasted about 6 weeks. :-)

Since we are moving this summer, I went through everything and gave away 6 large garbage bags full of fabric and sewing notions that I knew I would never use. Included in those bag were two ufo's that have been sitting around for 5 and 7 years. They are being finished and given away as charity quilts. I still have two 30 gallon tubs filled with ufo's. I have a question. Do finished quilt tops constitute ufo's? I have 6 tops that I am waiting to quilt when I finally buy a good mid or long arm quilting machine. However, whenever I need a gift, I go through the finished tops and quilt one on my very small, cramped sewing machine. Hopefully, Iwill have a good quilting machine by this fall. Then the UFO tubs will empty!!

Well, I'm proud to say I've just finished my son's quilt that was in progress for about three years!! woo hoo! However...there are five other quilts in progress, one that will likely never be finished since my taste has changed, two are blocks of the month I have a diehard attitude about keeping up with. The other two are baby quilts I purposely put on hold until I got my son's quilt DONE. As far as other projects...I have a painting that's been on my easel for three years, scared to finish it but know I will some day, and oh..about two or three crochet projects I get a hankerin' for now and then. I gave up knitting and gave away all the stuff that goes with it!! I'm a little too stubborn to give up too much, but that knitting just had to go!

I can be guilt free here as I go with the logic that I have no UFO's - just quilt tops to be used for class examples, steps of progress to demo the ways to put something together, and trial pieces to see if i like a method so i can teach it or not. Any tops or pieces that I tire of gets sent to the best frined in the world who completes them as hug quilts.

It is funny you asked that question today. Just this morning I went thru all my UFO and made a list of them. I was then disappointed on how many there were. However, it was a good thing that one project wasn't started because this afternoon I received an e-mail about Jinny Beyer Woven Ribbon Quilt. I decided to use the fabric from the UFO Snow Bird kit to make a small Woven Ribbon Quilt. So sometimes an UFO is a good thing. Six of my UFOs are going to be undone and the fabric added to my slash and fabric from two other projects are going to be donated to a group (which I belong to) that makes baby quilts for our local hospitals and foster homes. I have a bunch. While organizing my workspace I managed to pull out all of my UFOs from hiding. Some I had forgotten about and some that I didn’t like when I first worked on them are very appealing now. One of my UFOs was to make a design wall. The design wall was my first completion and now displays all of my UFOs. The goal is to empty the design wall before starting something new. I’ve organized a group of neighbors to meet and work on UFOs and we just met this last Monday. Those who came agreed that setting aside a block of time to work on UFOs is very motivating. We keep each other going and it also gives us a chance to catch up on what’s going on in all of our busy lives. Someday I’ll manage to post the finished projects on my TQS member page.

At present I have between 35 and 40 UFOs. I suppose that is good for someone who only started quilting four years ago! However, These are all ongoing projects. Real UFOs are quite rare and I only have 3 or 4 that have been abandoned and still exist. If I abandon a project, I usually use it to make something useful, table runner, folder cover, embroidery organiser etc, so any UFO that is on the shelf is actually a WIP. I tend to work on a range of projects at once. Since my whole life is about fabric creations, I need to make sure that I don't get bored. even if I put a project aside for a few moths, I will generall get the urge eventually to go back to it. Also, I have found that projects which I have not designed myself do not last long, so I usually stick to my own designs (except for the TQS BOM). I have a wide variety of both hand and machine work, but I find also, that the hand work tends to progress faster as I do it every evening while I am watching TQS etc on the web.

3 needlepoint UFO's, 1 for each of my kids, that may or may not get finished. Only 2 of them have been started and haven't been worked on in years. 1 baby afghan - the blocks are made and will probably be assembled some day (they were a rework from an afghan that finished distorted so I took it apart and started over). A beaded doll kit from way back - the dress is finished, it just needs assembled and the parasol made. Only 1 quilt UFO from the '80s that's on my to do list but not anytime soon. A few smaller items from the '90s that may or may not get finished. The more recent ones are still works in progress because I plan to finish them and they won't become UFO's for a few more years. I'm doing my best not to start many new projects until some of the old ones are finished, but usually have several going at the same time.

I have no unfinished projects. My preference is to buy fabric for only the project to be currently worked on. As for a stash - I figure the quilt stores are my stash and there's no storage or outdated fabric for me to deal with. However, in my over 25 years of making quilts a scrap stash has accumulated. Recently, out of these scraps I have made a king size, double bed size, and extra long lap quilt (the guys complained about feet not being covered). Cleared out 3 drawers worth and still have 4 more to go. Great thing about scrap quilts, the various thread colors and amounts left on spools also can be used. At least 10 spools were used up while constructing the quilts. Superior thread is awsome for keeping lint out of the machine. All those "other" threads had me cleaning out the bobbin and throat plate area every few hours.

Well there are a few around, but seriously I finish most of what I start. (I do work on 2 or 3 projects at a time.) Recently I was in a slump, not knowing which project to start on and I decided to drag out a lighthouse quilt project I'd started a couple of years ago. I had done one for a class sample and had visions of making others into a quilt..I'm happy to report that the last of the lighthouse scenes is finished as of today.!! - so now I have to assemble them into a setting that will make a nice quilt. There is another thing I'd like to say on this subject and that is --not every project needs to be finished. --sometimes we're learning a new skill, experimenting with new products and when we've gotten the learning done- it's done- even though there may be a little project that can't be called "finished". Just a thought - I do a lot of trial things--some of them turn out great, some were just for the test, and now I know I don't want to do that again. Pat

I thought having UFO's was just part of the creative culture we belong to. My Grandma and Mom all had UFO's so I'm just passing on the family tradition. When I die my kids can figure out what to do with my UFO's. Maybe I'll wrap each one up in a box with a big bow and leave it to my grandkids. ;)

Personally I have no UFOs. I have completed every quilt I have started (78 in 10 years). If I don't like it, I donate it to charity. My quilt guild (150 members) has a Philanthropy Committee that takes unfinished quilt tops, collections of blocks and orphan blocks and combines them with donated fabric to complete the quilt tops. At our gatherings we enjoy seeing what we can do with others' cast-off UFOs. Then some of the longarm quilters in the guild donate their services. The finished quilts are given to Habitat for Humanity homes, Ronald McDonald houses, assisted living facilities, hospitals, etc.

I have various UFOs (I think there are 6). One is a queen sized bed quilt which is being hand quilted (the last one I'll ever do as this is the 5th winter I've worked on it!), 2 applique quilts, two from classes I took last year and the third one from a class is waiting for me to hand sew the binding on the back and then I can declare victory. I just finished a UFO so I am on my path to completing most this year. If I finish one applique and the two from the classes in 2010, I'll be thrilled. :)

I would hate to have any UFOs. I'm actually working on about three things at the moment - quilting one, piecing another and binding the third - but I know they will all get finished before I start on another major project. I sometimes have a 'finish in one day project' just to have a change of scene, but generally I work on something until it's completely finished.

I have many UFO's of quilt tops, exchange blocks, embroidery, cross stitch, sewing, crocheting, and home decorating. Prior to joining a quilt guild, I was pretty good about finishing what I started. Now, with TQS, my quilt guild and the internet, I am daily tempted to start new projects, try new techniques, try out new tools or buy more fabric. I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment, when a project is finished. However, I think I enjoy the process during a project more. Some of my UFO's will get finished, but some will likely not ever get finished by me. So, maybe I should give my UFOs to someone who I know will appreciate them and get them finished.

I have about 15-20 UFOs at the moment ranging from quilts to knittigs to embroidery. I'm still fairly optimistic and think that I'll finish them all myself some day... I have already finished two of them this year, and my goal is to do one UFO per month so if I keep up the pace, I'll be rid of them in 2011. The only risk is that some new ones might appear to replace the old ones...

I have one needlepoint UFO that I gave away. I have one cross-stitch UFO that I work on when football or something interesting is on TV. Then it gets added to four that need framing. Quilt UFOs...the oldest is about ten years old...I discovered I learned quite a bit about scrap quilts and color in the meanttime! The newest UFO is the 2009 BOM by Sue Garman. It keeps getting redesigned... There are about 5 others that are on back burners or completely forgotten about.

A year ago I actually started making up a list of my UFOs, and tried to include what I needed to get done to finish them. Of course, then I broke that list down into sub-categories, the largest one is called TBQ (to be quilted). I have been working on completing at least the tops in the UFO list so I can move them over to the TBQ list, which is probably why that list is so large. Then again, I know people who remind that completed tops take up a lot less shelf space than completed quilts. The benefit of actually finishing a UFO top is that I have more fabric to add to the stash and the scrap boxes to make future UFOs, I mean quilts!

I almost feel guilty saying this.. but I only work on one quilt at a time and don't start another project until I have the binding on. Only once did I attempt two projects at one time and didn't finish either. Currently I'm making a Baltimore Quilt (hand sewing).

Well at the beginning of the year I made a list of the UFO's I would like to complete this year, probably won't succeed, as I also made a list of a few new ones I would like to start AND finish, they are not quilts but a wall hanging a Santa that will fit over a 2 ltr coke bottle, and a 2 ft tall stick Santa. I have the 2009 TQS BOM at the Long Arm Quilter right now that I finished early this year as well as the 2008 BOM, and it's next to go the long arm quilter. Now when you say UFO's does this also mean projects you've got a pattern you just have to have quilt made out of, AND have the fabric for it also??? If it counts, then I'm done with, 'cause now they're stacking up high in numbers. What's a girl to do??? Heidi

OMG ! My first thought was" do you think anybody will admit to how many UFO 's they have?" Followed quickly by saying to you all that I have way too many to count and they go back lots of years. I love to piece more than to finish. But I finish a lot of projects, too. So, here's the deal---I know how much I like to find a treasure at an estate /yard/moving sale. So, someday my UFO's will bring the same pleasure to another quilter. And I've had great fun building them. No guilt here!

I think you should be ranking them by age also! I have a UFO from the 80's which I drag out every now and then to see if something magical has happened and it will work this time. Of a more recent vintage I have 4 unquilted tops that are waiting for inspiration but will be completed. I have another top that isn't working....and may eventually be declared a pile of scraps as opposed to unfinished. I have an unfinished cross stitch picture that will probably never see a frame but I just can't seem to part with it even though I have declared that I am too blind to do cross stitch anymore. I have a huge number of designed projects on file on my computer. I have no fabric projects cut out except what I am working on at the moment. I have a knitting/crochet project going most of the time, always a garment and a piecing/quilting/machine embroidery project on the boil. So in all honestly I have 3 UFOs at the moment as well as a BOM which I obviously cannot work on all the time.

I have 7 UFOs I plan to finish. One small wall hanging needs piping and binding, 1 small wall hanging needs, maybe, quilting in the small border and binding; 1 queen I'm in the process of machine quilting; 1 queen preprinted wholecloth I'm hand quilting (and then have to design & make a border to widen it into a king size quilt - no preprinted king size out there, that I could find); 1 lap quilt needs the border ripped out, cut and put together another 12 inch block, and ripping/sewing to change from 3x5 blocks to 4x4; 1 lap quilt needs applique or something added and then to finish from there (too much to think about right now); and 1 Christmas wall hanging needs to be quilted. Ok, I'm tired now, just thinking about it! :)

I'm generally chronic about finishing. I one quilt to finish. I do have a load of blocks to put together somehow from various projects I which I did not add them.

Wow. How funny to see this. I have just completed 2 UFO's and will be starting on the 3rd. I plan to finish them all. How many more oh too many. I love to do the piecing not the finishing but I am making a change. :) Hugs ~Joanne ~

Well.... I think I might have close to 8 UFOs sitting in various stages of completion. I have put them in a drawer so they don't stare at me when I am sewing on other things. But it is my goal to finish at least half of them this year... cross my fingers!

I currently have 6 UFO's and a quilt in the designing stage (does that one count?). My plan is to finish 4 of those UFO's before I even purchase the fabric for the quilt I'm planning right now. My problem is I see a new design I want to try and get all excited about it and put what I'm working on aside. I've decided to try and narrow down UFO's to 3 at a time. I am currently working on about 3 right now (I rotate what I'm working on depending on the mood), so I'm making progress.

I work best if I do just one project at a time. Sometimes after I finsih the quilt top I will sew a garment for myself then return to the quilt. I go crazy if I have more than that to work on.

Other than one lap quilt which I have gotten back out and am finishing, the only other two projects are on-going BOMs. For the past few months I've been going through my UFOs and have finished them one by one. I've hung a few but I don't have a clue what I'm going to do with the one I'm finishing now. It may go to charity, although I'm not pleased with some ugly stitching on the back, most of which happened during free-motioning with my older machine. I don't like the quilt well enough to rip it out and do it again, especially since it looks reasonably decent on the front.

On general principal (and due to potential embarrassment for the huge number!!), I refuse to count the number of "UFO's" I have. Personally, I don't know anyone who finishes one project, completely, without having any UFO's around the house. Is that even possible?!?! My projects get done when I get tired of looking at the same old things in my house and want something new on the bed or wall, or when I need a gift for someone special.

I have at least 30 in all various stages - I count kits I have purchased and done nothing with, classes I have taken, have a great start, but then get distracted when I get home etc etc.. This year I started a list on my personal blog - using the list feature - I only put 10 up there with the objective of finishing those 10 this year, KNOWING I will pick up other projects along the way. I mark the quilt COMPLETED on the list - it stays there so I can see my progress - I have completed ONE on my list so far - my son's Turning20 quilt that I quilted on my home machine. I started out by putting everything on list on an index card when I clean my studio One other thing I do - every time I do a clean up and reorganize my space is determine if I really will do this project. I have taken the fabric for a couple of kits and old old BOM from LQSs and just folded it and put it in my stash. Mary in MA

I just finished a quilting UFO and I have one left. In process are two BOM's and I have three cross stitch UFO's that I will finish someday when I am tired of quilting and want to take a break. I won't talk about the stack of books sitting there waiting for my attention! Barbara

I plan to finish them all, ofcourse. I've given myself a limit now on how many UFOs I can have. If I want to start something new then I hurry and finish a UFO. Also, I try to lower my UFO limit each year.
