It's so much fun to find the perfect quilt pattern. Then I have to find similar quilts in magazines or on-line and combine them to make it my own. A dear friend once told me "AL" (artistic license) is a quilter's best friend. It's so wonderful to see the look on someone's face when their given a quilt and told it's one-of-a-kind made just tor them. |

I love the spontaneity of playing with color and fabric and letting it fall into place, not knowing where I'll end up. I strive for originality--making something that has never been done and never will be done. I do get inspiration from magazines and books but use that as a take off point for my quilts. My quilting soul mate is Freddie Moran. |

There I am able to play with borders, blocks, colors and fabric, when I am done I can then print out the colors and the amount of fabric I need. One problem you can get carried away and play way to much with the colors. That's what does it for me. Debbie |

I use EQ 6 and my favorite tool is the rotate block. It instantly give me a view into several options for using the same block and color palette... |

My world is spent in front of a computer screen for work. When I get the creative urge for a quilt design instead of a computer program or web page design, out comes the graph paper and pencil crayons and colour markers. I have even found a website to print graph paper! I carry a small sketch book all the time - you never know when an idea will hit. I use the computer word processing and printshops for making the formal or shareable patterns. |

Graph paper, coloring pencils, pencil and ruler. It also depends on if I'm using a specific fabric or going for a theme, or sometimes it's just a design in my head that I have to get down on paper. I rarely use patterns, and I usually modify them, but I sure do love looking through the books and magazines for ideas as well. |

I start with my pattern or a picture of what I want to end up with, preview fabric, then go through stash to see if I need to shop for more fabric. I pencil through the cutting directiions to decide if I can streamline anything and to make sure I have enough fabric, and figure exactly how I'm going to cut. Sometimes I cut differently than a pattern suggests. Then I write up a master cutting plan for each fabric and cross it off as I cut the pieces. this includes the binding strips. The quilt may languish as a UFO for awhile, (in a storage container) but I will know that when I have time to sew...it is ALL there and ready for me. I either include the backing, or keep an eye out for what I want to buy for the backing (on sale if possible). Also, if it is a planned scrap quilt, I can pre-package the blocks (to spread the color or design) and then when ready to sew, just pick up the pre-packaged block and sew it. It is so much easier that way. |

That was OK - it had a plan, but the piecing was random!! Mary in MA |

I'm both. It depends on what strikes my eye or my mood. If I see a particular pattern that "speaks" to me then I'll run with it, usually auditioning fabric along the way. If I see a fabric that catches my eye then I'll think about what it can best be used for. If my stash needs to be busted, well then, anything goes; stand back as the fabric flies! *grin* |

Then on to EQ to work on the idea, whether it is drawing the applique pattern freehand and then eventually converting to an EQ pattern. Or just sitting in a meeting/workshop/class for work and if my interest starts to wain or get flat out bored - the doodleing takes over (I now keep my doodles in a file folder - you never know when one may pop out again) |

Even in my sleep - or when planning keeps me awake. I plan quilts for special people in my life and try to put as much about them into the quilt as I can using favorite colors, themes or even pictures. Just finished one for my Grandaughter with pictures of her and other members of the family as well as the alphabet Bible verses she learned in kindergarten. I'm now working on one for my son with the theme of his college years. (Roll Tide!) I've got so many quilts in my head I wish I'd started quilting years ago!!!! |

Most of the time I will have a pattern in mind before I purchase any fabric. Although sometimes I see something I can't pass up. I also like to do BOM's. My new project I will soon be starting is a signature quilt. My daughter will be collecting signatures at her wedding next week. She has picked out the pattern and most of the colors (purples and cream) so I am always watching for some lovely purples. |

Either way I just have fun with my projects. |

I gave up sketching long ago because I'm terrible at it, and the quilts never turn out the way I sketch them anyway. I have used photos for inspiration, but most of the time the quilts take on a life of their own and turn out completely different than I planned. I also avoid maps and never read directions...... where's the adventure in that? |

I have to have a pretty good idea of what I want to make before I can buy fabric. I don't have a very large fabric stash because I buy for each quilt as I make it. I am trying to change that because I want the fabric to be my inspiration. I am too stuck to having instructions. I am not artistic but I love art quilts. I have to live vicariously through the truly artistic souls out there. |

I think EQ6 is going to be a purchase in the near future...I am very much a visual person, and need to see what I have in my head, before I get over-committed with both time and fabric! To directly answer the question, I am a planner, but still finding my way to make the best process for me! Nancy |

Then I design the quilt on the computer and add fabric. Sometimes the fabric tells me what design to use and sometimes the quilt is designed before searching for fabric. I've been asked why I don't design the quilts and let someone else make them so I would have more time to do all of the other things I want or need to do, and I tell them because the quilt doesn't always end up like the original design. I often make changes along the way. |

Art type quilts don't just speak to me they shout..."keep going...it's getting good" and so my right brain forges ahead and I follow along for the ride....most times I am amazed at what shows up in front of me. That is pretty much why I enjoy the artsy stuff so much.....the freedom to let it all just happen. |

I try not to be rigid to my first idea. I let the quilt talk to me. Now when I say that to a fellow quilter, they seem to understand. My non-quilter friends give me that funny look - Her quilts talk???? Often things that look great in my minds eye are not so glorious once exicuted. There is a reason that all sewing machines come with a seam ripper. Plan and prepare but be open to change. Betty Ann |
