Boy, this is right down my alley! I know many quilters like to have their sleeves made from the same fabric as the backing of their quilt, but.......if you are one of those many quilters that run out of fabric, or don't have time to make a sleeve, and you really want your quilt entered into the upcoming show then the Breaking News is to use Quilters Hangup. It is a 4" tall, pre-made fabric sleeve, with the extra pleat ready to attach. It works great! Alex and Gizmo Girl, Cheryl, demonstrated the product on "The Quilt Show" show #106, July 2007 on the show. Check it out both on the show or at www.quiltershangup.com. PS. When researching the sleeve sizes for all worldwide quiltshows we found that 4" is the generally required size.

AQS had different sleeve requirements this year. So, you need to check with the show you are putting your quilt in to find out what kind of sleeve you need. Robbi Joy Eklow has great directions in her book about how to make a sleeve that will allow your quilt to hang flat at the top. And I believe that the AQS requirements are kind of like her directions. I use her method now all the time. It takes more fabric, but it makes a nicer sleeve. I always match my sleeve to the fabric on the back of my quilt too.

Thanks. This is good to know for larger quilts, but is there a recommended size for use on mini or doll size quilts? It seems that the 4" would be rather large. Any info on this?? Thanks again.

I pretty much always add a sleeve right before I hand-stitch the binding to the back of the quilt, and I use the same fabric as the back of the quilt so it matches perfectly. If the recipient decides not to hang it, the sleeve never even shows. I cut my sleeve 10" wide x the width of the quilt. I then "hem" the sides by pressing under 1/4" on each short side, then 1/4" again, then sew that hem down. I then fold the sleeve in half along the long dimension (making it now about 5" wide), except that one half is 1/2" shorter than the other. (You can eyeball this.) This allows for the depth of the rod. Press that crease really well. Then refold, matching the long cut edges to one another. Then sew that edge to the back of the quilt, with the short side of the sleeve to the back of the quilt. Slip stitch the crease of the sleeve to the back of the quilt. BethMI
