It has only been off twice because of power changes at the station. They have a camera on it. Raleigh must have some oddity, but I can't think of it. But in today's N&O, one of their retired reporters wrote an article about some of the oddities he and his wife have come upon during their travels in their RV. They sold everything and bought an RV and have been traveling the country. Check it out. http://www.newsobserver.com/135/story/1064901.html We've been to several of the places he mentions (Mitchell Corn Palace, Wall Drug, and Mount Rushmore). Boys Town in Omaha has a giant ball made of stamps. Western Nebraska has Car Henge... When we retire, I would like to do what they are doing. |

It was in a house that my mother bought in 1977 (an older home in Watertown, TN) and it is still burning today. KT |

The bulb, known as the Eternal Light, was credited as being the longest-lasting bulb in the 1970 edition of the The Guinness Book of World Records, two years before the discovery of the Livermore bulb." |

Fairmont was the site of the first Father's Day service (the first Mother's Day was in Grafton, about 1/2 hour south) 2. The pepperoni roll was first commercially produced here. Pepperoni rolls were the original miner's lunch, made by the wives of miners because enclosing the meat in the roll kept it fresher and the men could eat one handed while continuing to work. Eventually a local bakery picked it up and history was made. 3. The Middletown Mall was the very first mall in the state of WV |

Electricity was new and didn't exist in most homes, so it drew lots of attention at the fair. Read all about it at http://www.explorestlouis.com/media/factSheets/fact_worldsFair.asp?PageType= You'll find lots of parallels with what's going on in the world today--the more things change, the more they stay the same. My dad's a Civil War buff. Cedar Grove, one of the antebellum (built before the Civil War) homes, has a cannon ball in the living room wall, and one in the support beams under the living room. Vicksburg was an important battle because it was a port on the Mississippi River, and taking the river was an important part of the Northern battle plan. |
