Is your firewall or ISP blocking port 1935?
We are currently using port 1935 to play the video. Check if your firewall is blocking that port or our website. Some wireless networks are setup to automatically block certain ports unless the ISP unblocks them specifically, contact your ISP.

VIDEO QUALITY or WATCHING A SHOW:
A few members (very few) are reporting some of the following issues with watching the video:
  • Video is choppy
  • Sound is intermittent
  • Video freezes

After many hours of investigation and only being able to fix the problem on people's computers who updated their software to the curent version, we are about 99% sure the problems lie within the persons computer and/or internet configuration. Our site has thousands of others who are successfully watching the streaming video and it is very clear. Unfortunately, fixing these issues seem to be out of our control.

What you can do to possibly fix the issues on your end:

  • Test your Internet Connection Speed Here
  • Make sure you have a currently supported operating system. Unfortunately, some things just don't work when they are out dated.
  • Make sure you are using a current version of you browser (the program you use to view the internet).
  • If you computer is older than a few years, it's possible you may be experiencing problems due to hardward issues (Video card, not enough memory). Freezing is many times the result of these issues.
  • Slow internet connections can cause these issues because your computer is not receiving the video quick enough. Our servers are sending it, but your wireless network or internet connection may be causing you to reveive at a slower pace than we are sending the streaming video file.
  • DSL Modem: Make sure computers are plugged into the ADSL jacks, not the phone jacks. This will cause a slow speed for a DSL line.

FLASH PLAYER:

  • Getting the message "Our Videos require the Adobe Flash Player 8 or above "?
    • Click the link that says "Click Here to Get Flash" on that page and click the "Install Now" button on the Adobe website.
  • NO "Install Button" on the Adobe Flash Player website?

HOW TO UPLOAD IMAGES TO YOUR PROFILE

PREPARING TO UPLOAD IMAGES

UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
You will need to take digital photos of your quilts or scan them. Put the images in a “folder” on your computer that you will be able to easily find – such as My Photos. When you download digital images from a digital camera the files are usually jpg or jpeg. Jpg and jpeg are very standard format for photo images. Here are all the files types accepted during our upload process: gif, jpg, jpeg, bmp, and png. The maximum file size that can be uploaded to our site is 8 Megabytes – be advised, such a large file will take a while to upload. Most photos taken directly from a “point and shoot” digital camera are approximately 1 Megabyte with a medium to high dpi (dots per inch) quality.

NOTE: Photo images can be low res or high res. The standard low resolution used for computer images is 72 dpi (dots per inch). This resolution looks fine on a computer screen, but is not very good quality for printing. The 72 dpi image uploads quicker. High resolution photos are generally 300 dpi or greater. The difference has to do with the file size. A five-inch photo at 72 dpi will upload much faster than a five-inch photo with 300 dpi. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. The upload process will automatically re-size your photo to fit our website format. Be advised that the maximum image file size permissible on our site is 8 Megabytes.

TIP: There are many programs (some come standard with your computer) that enable you to re-size your photos and save them with a lower resolution than they usually are when downloaded directly into the computer. If you choose to re-size your photo images prior to uploading them, be sure do a “Save As” and alter the file name so the original file will remain full size and unaltered.

SCANNING PRINTED PHOTOS
You can use a scanner to scan photos into your computer. The settings on a scanner will vary. Read the scanner’s manual to scan low resolution images for uploading. Once the images are scanned, save them in a folder that you can easily find such as My Photos.

STEP ONE – ENTER YOUR PERSONAL INFO BUT DO NOT UPLOAD IMAGES YET
1. Your profile must be created and submitted before uploading any images.
2. Click on Update My Profile in the Menu Bar
3. Enter all required information – at the bottom click Submit. You must SUBMIT your information before attempting to upload a photo.

STEP TWO – UPLOAD A PERSONAL PROFILE IMGAGE

1. Take a great photo of yourself to upload. If you are totally camera shy then upload an image that best represents you. The photo needs to be saved in a folder on your computer so that you can located it for the upload process.
2. On the Update My Profile Page select Upload Profile Image.
3. On the new page that opens – click Browse.
4. This opens a finder than enables you to browse for the folder and file on your computer which contains the image you wish to upload. When you find the file of the photo you want to upload, click Open or Okay. You will now notice the file name and file path in the window to the left of “Browse.”
5. In the lower right corner of this window click UPLOAD. Be patient until the file is uploaded. Depending on the size of the file and your internet connection speed, it might take some time. Just wait until it is uploaded.
6. When you return to your profile page your image will be there. – Congratulations, you have successfully uploaded a photo!

STEP THREE – UPLOAD YOUR QUILT PROFILE AND PHOTOS.
We recommend that you do this one quilt at a time.

1. Under Update My Profile, under My Quilt Photos, click Add Quilt.
2. Enter all the correct information about the quilt in each field. Under maker, do not use me, or self. You can use your screen name if you do not wish to use your real name.
3. Once you have accurately completed the information about the quilt, click Submit.
4. After you have submitted the information, click Upload Quilt Image.
5. On the new page that opens – click Browse.
7. This opens a finder than enables you to browse for the folder and file on your computer which contains the image you wish to upload. When you find the file of the photo of the quilt you want to upload, click Open or Okay. You will now notice the file name and file path in the window to the left of “Browse.”
8. In the lower right corner of this window click UPLOAD. Be patient until the file is uploaded. Depending on the size of the file and your internet connection speed, it might take some time. Just wait until it is uploaded.
9. When you return to the quilt profile page your image will be there. – Congratulations, you have successfully uploaded a photo of your quilt!

When you have all SIX quilts and your personal profile complete – don’t forget to check the box stating you are entering the competition – and don’t forget to click SUBMIT or your changes to the profile will not remain and you will not be entered in the competition.

COOKIES:
  • not the baked ones, although that sounds good right now
  • Make sure your browser is set to accept cookies from us.

ANTI-VIRUS, FIREWALLS or SITE/CONTENT BLOCKERS:
  • Make sure they are not blocking our site, even accidentally. Some programs are designed to not allow certain content like video, images and secure websites (https://). There are too many to list.

The Forum/Website seems slow?
  • Retrieval speed can be based on a lot of different factors.
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP - both the users and/or for the hosting company): sometimes the ISP experiences a number of issues that slow down the internet. They are simply a computer network like all the rest with a tremendous amount of traffic. The have to upgrade and maintain their equipment constanly.
  • Speed can also be related to all the connecting points between your computer and the server, including a wireless network.
  • Webserver: Could be performing maintenance related tasks which increase server load. One of the services may need to be restarted. May be experiencing heavy trafic.
  • The website graphics: Yes, we do have good graphics on this site which will require more loading time than a simple text based website.

Screen Width of the Website:
We made a decision early on to move forward with technology and utilize the screen width space available on all the newer monitors. We have adjusted the width of the Forum to be flexible to a persons monitor but there are a number of factors that prohibit us at this time from making the entire site like that. We apologize to anyone using older monitors that in some cases you have to scroll to the right if you want to see the right hand column.

Membership Questions

How long will my membership last?
Each membership lasts while episodes of a series are posted. A series is 13 episodes! The first series will post regularly from April 2 - December 31, 2007. However, each episode will remain posted for one year and your membership will allow you to watch episodes in that series until the last episode of that series retires from the web. That's the long answer!

The short answer is, if you join anytime this year, you're membership will last until Dec 31, 2008 -yes, we said, 2008! Your first Profile Star will indicate that you have access to those first thirteen shows.

Having said that - if you decide to purchase series two, when it becomes available, you'll get a second Profile Star indicating that you have access to all the shows in Series Two. That series will overlap the previous series, and will extend your membership until the last episode of that series retires from the website - sometime in mid-2009. Since the series overlap, you'll always have full access to everything we offer unless you don't purchase the next series of shows.

Here's a good way to look at it - you are not paying for a specific length of time - like a month or a year. You are purchasing a package and so the length of time that your membership lasts (for that series) depends on when you join. At a minimum, your package price will give you one full year of The Quilt Show enjoyment!

So - for the price -its a really good deal!
See you online!

What do Star Members get that Basic Members don't get?
We want a HUGE world-wide quilt community and we are proud to offer the world's first full-service site of its kind. Basic members have access to Chat, Blog, Forum and other features. They cannot use our powerful Search Engine and find other members, shops, shows, teachers, or quilts. Nor can they watch episodes of The Quilt Show. We are happy to offer a wide range of free services for quilters and hope that Basic Members will realize the value of Upgrading to Star Member status.

What are all these Stars?
Members purchasing the Series One episodes between January 1 and April 2, 2007, are considered our Charter Members. After our first show posts in April, members will never again have the opportunity to have a Gold Star. In the future if you see a gold star on anyone's profile, you'll know they were with us at the start!

Currently, if you purchase the Gold Star Member Package, you'll also get your First Series Star - it is a bluish-purple star. You'll get another star for each subsequent Series you purchase. It won't be long before your profile might have several stars.

How do I upgrade to a Star Member?
Log into your account. Click on the "My Account" link, then the "Upgrade my Membership" link and follow the instructions from there.

About the Shows & Video Questions

Will there only be 13 episodes for 2007? How often will they roll out? Can you explain to us how ads will be treated on the show?
Yes, there will only be one series (13 episodes, approx 45 minutes each) in 2007. A Gold Star Package includes all of Series One and the episodes will post regularly between April-December. It is similar to the way a magazine comes once a month or so.

We are planning two more series for 2008 when episodes will post more frequently. However, the shows are just a part of this endeavor. We have built the site to create the worlds first full-service online quilting community. We hope you'll visit everyday, read The Daily Blog, catch up with friends via chat, and help others learn by sharing your knowledge with other quilters on the Forum. Alex and I will always be chiming in to help when we can.

Regarding ads. Yes, there will be ads. I'm not sure if you can imagine the costs associated with an endeavor of this magnitude, but we're not just producing the shows, we've also created a place for them to be shown - so we are the network too. Video on the internet - the size and quality we are offering - is expensive when it is accessed by thousands of people. Our sponsors are the ones who have enabled us to create this amazing quilting hub. We are grateful and proud to have them on our team and proud that they are posted on our site.

If you have watched the trailer, you will see that it opens in an ad-free screen. Advertising during each 45 minute show will be about half of what you would see on standard TV.

However the sponsorships do not cover all our costs - so your subscriptions are important. Magazines have ads - and subscriptions. Think of us as a video magazine on the Internet.

How long are the shows?
Each episode will be about 45 minutes long.

What are the topics for the first series?
We can't tell you specific topics (that information will be leaking out with The Daily Blog) but the video trailer currently viewable at our site indicates to you a lot about the content and diversity. We'll target beginner - advance - intermediate. We'll target the seniors and younger quilters as well.

In some of your promos, you mentioned being able to get the series on a DVD; any update on that?
The DVDs of a single series (13 episodes) will be available for delivery once all the episodes have posted on the web. Series One will ship in January of 2008. Click "Shop" in the purple navigation bar for more details. Then click the DVD box or the link to get additional details - you don't have to add it to your cart to read about it.

Will I be able to download the shows to my iPod?
As it is now, the Flash movie files are not downloadable. At the end of the series, all the episodes will be available on a DVD set. Having said that, we are looking into the option to download shows to ipod AFTER the season is over - not during the series. It is something we need to spend more time to work out. It is a reasonable idea and the possibility does exist.

I'm on a Dial-up Connecton...Can I watch the Video?
Unfortunately, the videos are huge and dial-up is slow. The two just don't mix well. You can watch it, but one member reported it took 2 hours to download.
