Although it is 2008, I thought I might back track a bit and share a few pics from previous convoys that I thought you would enjoy to get an idea of just how BIG this event is for us.
The young man in the cowboy hat is a very special guy to us. His name is Dalton and his Uncle Roger is our neighbor/farmer a mile down the road from us. Dalton’s family and my DH’s family go way back to the early 1890’s when their ancestors came over from Sweden and settled in this area to begin their family farming and also, them along with many other Swedish immigrants who settled in the area, built the country church we all still attend. After the convoy, Dalton went on to win 1st place in state in his swimming division. Words can not express the feelings we felt when we found out that Dalton’s dream of his 1st “GOLD” medal was realized. Sew, moving on to the 2008 Quilt in Progress... I have found myself still recovering from a month long bout with the flu which makes for quite a challenge when on a deadline, but thankfully things are on the upswing and I am down to only a couple very short naps a day for additional rest so I can stay somewhat on time. And, although winter is still with us, that pesky quilting frog did sneak into the sewing room and his singing of “Rippit” was inevitable. This is my 1st experience sewing diamonds in such a large amount and also my 1st Lonestar quilt, so just getting to the point of sewing was a challenge. The next was figuring out how to move the rows to the machine to keep them in order, thus out to the garage rafters to find a large box no longer needed for warranty to cut into. Using 2 layers, I covered it with fleece because that was all I had on hand. (FYI – Also new lesson learned: it works much better than the flannel that covers my design wall. HMMM-maybe a change there in the future) WA-LA, I was in business and good news: the board can handle all the rows of 2 star points at one time. I was off and running so I thought. All of a sudden it hit me that I am going to need to iron all the seams open. So to task I went and with day 2 behind me...
I have ½ of the Lonestar all sewn together and in the process got a very nice steamed facial. What us girls won’t do to keep up our looks, tee hee hee. Til next time, Keep those 18 Wheels Rollin’ and those sewing machines Quiltin’ Additional Links: http://www.myspace.com/sosdconvoy http://www.specialolympics.org/Special+Olympics+Public+Website/English/Support/Truck_Convoy/About/default.htm http://www.sdconvoy.com/index.html |
