I created "The Original Quilt Patis" (tm), temporary plastic foundation technique. Taught the technique for 10-12 years before it became a product in May 1996. I was on Simply Quilts #509. It started w/hexagons but now we make more shapes.

 Pati's theory of UFO's (Click to Read)09/26/2008

I have a theory about when a project is finished or if it is a UFO.

I usually set out with a specific goal... work with coordinating a particular color, learn a new technique, improve my stitches (quilting or applique), or create a new pattern to use the Quilt Patis, etc.  Once that goal is accomplished the project is technically finished... even if it is only one block of that technique or a completed pattern with it's completed sample.  It is only a UFO when the goal has not been met.

Here is one I started after seeing it in a Feb QNM either 87 or 88. I remember it by the apartment I was in and I was working at the American Heart Association when I started it.  I just unpacked it from an obscure moving box.  2858_quilts_aug_sept_2008_175.jpg I think the borders didn't fit and I was less experianced to know why.

This is why when I take a class I bring either Christmas fabrics or in the color scheme of my bedroom.  If I only make one block to accomplish knowledge of the technique, I will soon have enough blocks to make a sampler quilt. I don't worry if they are not all the same size block.  I can set the smaller blocks like a square in a square or a lopsided log cabin to resize as needed.  I make sure I keep all the scraps.  If I am making a corner triangle by sewing a square on it's diagonal I just add another seam before cutting off the excess... Voila! a 1/2 square triangle already done for the scrap bag.

I hope this theory helps everyone stress less about UFO's.
