Elena Morera (my partner) and I co-own gregory case photography. We specialize in quilt and textile photography and have over 50 clients from over 20 states that send their quilts and textiles to our studio to be featured in books, catalogs, juried shows, exhibits, patterns, and fabric designs. We have over 17 books that feature our photography.
For the last three years, we have photographed the exhibits and events for the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles (www.sjquiltmuseum.org). We also photograph artist/designer’s studios and assorted marketing booths at various quilt and textile trade shows. In addition, we are guest bloggers on Quilter’s Buzz (www.quiltersbuzz.com).
Gregory is “Photo Man” on The Quilt Show and has an on-going slide show (see top of this page in the purple navigation bar: "Slideshows") of some of the behind the scenes of the Show and the surrounding La Veta countryside.
We plan to write regularly on this blog about quilt and textile photography and related subjects. Through this blog, we will introduce you to people, books, magazines, websites, blogs, quilts, textiles, patterns, fabric, and designs that you might not be familiar with and we’ll include lots of tips, features, and extended tutorials on how to improve your own quilt and textile photography. Some day, when our time permits, we plan to update our own web site: http://www.gregorycase.com.
We look forward to your comments, suggestions, thoughts, and topics to discuss on this blog. And of course, the opinions and views expressed in this blog are ours alone and do not necessarily reflect the opinions and views of The Quilt Show management, sponsors, underwriters, advertisers, or its guests.

Welcome to my first blog for The Quilt Show! And a big thanks to Bob, TQS's Web Guru, who walked me through this whole new blog experience! Elena Morera (my partner) and I plan to write regularly about quilt and textile photography and related subjects. Through this blog, we will introduce you to people, books, magazines, websites, blogs, quilts, textiles, patterns, fabric, and designs that you might not be familiar with and we’ll include lots of tips, features, and extended tutorials on to improve your own quilt and textile photography. So let’s start... “Embellished Mini-Quilts: Creative Little Works of Art” has a special place in my heart. This book was previewed at the International Quilt Festival/Houston, October 2007, and the author, Jamie Fingal, was there signing books and will be signing more of these books at Road to California as well. I was the book photographer. Why it has a special place in my heart is for two reasons. First, I own about ten camera lenses; often, I will use one or two lenses while the rest sit unused. However, for this book, every single lens was used in my studio. Numerous images required me to be about an inch away from the quilt so that required a “macro” lens for some very detailed shots! Over 110 images were photographed and most of these images were technically challenging. The quilts themselves were small, often less than 36” height/width and many no larger than about 8” x 10.” It was amazing how these very talented artists could embellish their quilts. The second reason this book has a special place in my heart is after the photography is completed, it is rare that you hear much about your work—the book gets published and life moves on. But not this time! Jamie Fingal wrote me an e-mail, “Rebecca Ittner [the book’s editor] gave me an advanced copy of my book. I've got to tell you that the photography is outstanding. The full views of the quilts capture the viewer’s eye and then you get a sampling of the smaller details of beads and sequins. Amazing. I think about 50 people have looked at my book since I received it – and they all add that the photography is spectacular.” And Eileen Cannon Paulin, president of Red Lips 4 Courage Communications (a creative services company that bring together artists, writers, photographers, and book publishers together), wrote, “Gregory, I want to pass on the wonderful comments that we received while Cathy Yarnovich Risling and I were at Lark Books [the book’s publisher] last week. They just love Embellished Mini-Quilts. They raved about the photography (and raved)…” Jamie is a member of SAQA (Studio Arts Quilt Association), as is Ricky Tims and myself (and I'm the newest member on the Exhibits Committee). Her work also appeared in SAQA's Creative Force Catalog. (I photographed her featured quilt for this book.) “Embellished Mini-Quilts: Creative Little Works of Art” is available at most book stores and retails for about $25. I think it is a book worth checking out and might make the perfect gift for your favorite quilter! And I’m interested in hearing what some of your favorite quilt books are and why they are your favorite. Tell me what you think, make a comment, send a list, and I will put your name into a random drawing for a copy of “Embellished Mini-Quilts” signed by Jamie and myself. The drawing will happen on January 31, 2008, and the winner will be notified both on this blog and via their e-mail. Happy Reading! | | | |
