The Quilt Show Newsletter - Volume 1, No. 7

April 10, 2007
Volume 1, No.7
Calling all Chicago Quilt Festival Attendees!
Alex will be in the Bernina booth both Friday and Saturday
(April 13th and 14th) and would love to meet you.
Secret code word? "It's a New Day!"

First two shows online NOW!

The long wait is over. The first show, Get a Life, with special guest Joe Cunningham, is available to all members, basic and Star. Click here to watch it . The second show, Spiritual Threads, with special guest Vikki Pignatelli is also online and is available to Star Members. Click here to watch it.

We've had lots of wonderful feed back about the shows. We have also received some very positive critiques. Here are some things that you need to know.

1. We only shot six episodes so that we could look at them and make adjustments to production as necessary. The shows are about a quilter's lifestyle. Over time, you will find the how-to segments rich and diverse. You will also find that we will focus on the heart and soul of our guests and we will share a LOT of quilting information that does not need to be presented in a hands-on demonstration. The series is not scripted and is designed to be completely different from any other previous quilting show.

2. As you might expect, there are many technical aspects to a production. If there is a problem after the shoot - that show cannot be re-shot. Lighting issues will be rectified at the next taping. you can adjust your monitor if you feel the need to do so. Those who don't find the sound acceptable need to use computer speakers or headphones. It makes a huge difference.

3. You CAN enlarge the viewing image - see the topic on Environments in this issue.

4. Your remote control allows you to pause - fast rewind and fast forward. The little white 'wing' on the remote (bottom right) has a tiny arrow - click it and you'll see chapter selections. You can watch a segment and, if you need to come back later, instead of starting from the beginning, you can just select a chapter. - How great is that?

Tickets for TWO tapings - Available NOW!

It's that time again. Time to reserve your tickets for the next TWO sets of tapings. Here are the dates, guidelines and policies for requesting tickets. Those of you interested in flying should consider coming into Colordado Springs - 1:45 minutes from La Veta (Denver is 3 hours away). Logding in La Veta is limited, but Walsenbug, 15 minutes away has several hotels. Pueblo, Trinidad, and Alamoso are larger cities with plenty of amenities - all about 1 hour from La Veta. To learn more about La Veta there is inormation on Ricky's website here and other general information about La Veta here.

Series One, Second Half (Six Shows)
Dates: Friday-Sunday, June 22-24, 2007
Two shows are taped each day. Attendance to both is required.
Cut off date for requests - June 1, 2007, or when 'sold out'

Series Two, First Half (Six Shows)
Dates: Friday-Sunday, August 3-5
Two shows are taped each day. Attendance to both is required.
Cut off date for requests - July 15, 2007, or when 'sold out'

Free tickets are awarded on a first come, first served basis. All requested tickets MUST be used. Please do not request tickets if you are not committed to attending. Seating is limited and we do not overbook the seating area. Therefore, unused tickets result in empty seats and diminishes the energy of the show and denies someone else the opportunity to attend.

  • Due to the overwhelming request, tickets will be initially distributed for one day of attendance only.
  • You may, however, request up to two days.
  • If you request two days, state your FIRST preference.
  • Second day tickets will only be awarded if additional openings are available after the deadline for ticket requests. In the event that second day seating is available, you will be notified by email to confirm second day attendance. These second day tickets will also be arranged based on the original request on a first come, first served basis.
  • To make your request for free tickets or to get further information about tickets and our ticket policies, email service@thequiltshow.com

Size of Viewing Area - Environments

14_livingroomenv1.jpg
We still get the occasional request to have the video larger. We get comments like, "I think the environments are fun, but I'd reather see a full screen video." Viewing video on the web is really very complex. The larger the image, the more bandwidth that is required. Also because it is streaming on the web, the videos MUST be compressed in order to play effectively. There is a fine balance in order for us to get the best possible mixture of image size and sharpness. If you watch other videos on the web, you'll notice most are smaller than what we are offering - or significantly more 'fuzzy.'

Without being overly technical, we want you to know that we have pushed the envelope to create a video image that is larger than normal. All of this relates to the environments. We built the environments around the video image size. No one would prefer a full screen more than us - but technology does not allow us to do that and provide a smooth playing video with a sharp (by web standards) image. By the way - what we are serving up is designed for both PCs and Macs.

Here are two things you might like to know:

1. Flash, the program used on the video pages that enable you to interact with the remote and accessories - and also delivers the video - has an enlargement feature. For PC - right click to get a zoom option. If your browser allows it (Ricky's Safari does - his Firefox does not)- it will zoom. For Mac folks - Hold "Control" and click on the video and you'll also get a zoom option. If your browser allows it - it will zoom. However, please be aware that by zooming the image is greatly pixelated - or fuzzy.

2. The bottom left tab on the remote control opens to allow you to customize your screen - adding cars, lamps, new wall paper - a different theater - etc. You can create a blank environment by selecting the Living Room and turning off the items by using the pull out tab on the remote control.

Hope this helps you understand a bit more about the limitations of web technology. Also, remember, high quality DVDs of the series wil be available at the end of the year enabling you to watch the episodes in all their glory.
