We All Sew: Sew to Serve There are millions of stitchers and quilters around the world, and although thousands of miles separate us, we share the common thread of dedication to helping others through our craft.
Opportunities to create for others come in all shapes and sizes, from making pillowcases for patients in local hospitals (see TQS member donations to Conker Cancer) to creating and sending scarves to our soldiers overseas. So...how do you get started stitching for others and find volunteer projects that are "just right" for your skills? A great place to begin is to visit the Sew to Serve page. Sew to Serve lists charity organizations that need your help in order to help others. New opportunities are served up each week from wonderful organizations looking to improve the lives of others through sewing, quilting, knitting, and crafting. You'll find opportunities not only right in your own backyard, but across the nation and all around the world.

One such organization you'll find at Sew to Serve is Firehouse Quilt of Colorado, a non-profit group of volunteers who make and donate snuggle quilts to Colorado fire departments, local ambulance services, low-income hospitals, and victim advocate offices, and twin-sized quilts for battered women's shelters. Although Firehouse Quilts is a group that meets and sews locally, spreading the word about their good work can raise awareness of needs in other communities. The spirit of giving from sewers, quilters, and crafters translates directly through every loving stitch. With Sew to Serve, stitchers everywhere can find ways to help bring comfort to those who need it most. |

Shelburne Museum: Forgetting Piece By Piece
Alzheimer's Disease touches all classes and nationalities, and often affects people in the prime of their lives.
Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece, a moving exhibit currently on display at the Shelburne Museum, uses quilts to illustrate the devasting impact of this heartbreaking disease. Each of the 52 qulted pieces, some made by a caregiver or a family member of the victim, shares the story behind the quilt's inspiration.
The traveling exhibit was organized by the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative, and has been seen in 48 locations over 31 states. The current showing at the Shelburne runs through October 24, 2010. To learn more about this exhibit, click here.

Tip of the Week: Make Every (1/2) Inch Count Before washing her newly purchased fabrics, TQS member Alice serges along the crosswise cut to keep the edges from becoming matted and frayed. This is especially helpful when washing fat quarters, where every precious 1/2 inch counts.
If you have a great tip to share, send it here.

David Taylor Exhibit: Part 2 Tending to all the details involved in a quilt exhibition takes lots of hands and lots of work. Follow us as we share the behind-the-scenes action AND the opening reception for David Taylor's exhibit in Steamboat Springs, CO.
The exhibit is on display in the Steamboat Art Museum (SAM), which is located in the original First National Bank. The 1902 building was donated by a long-time area rancher and artist, Helen Rehder. Along with her donation came the stipulation that the building be used as a museum. Great care was taken to maintain original features of the building; including stone walls, tin ceilings, the vault, and bank teller windows.
The SAM is one many historic buildings located in the heart of Steamboat Springs. The city offers a architectural walking tour for visitors to learn more about this delightful and historic town. It's a great way to spend a summer afternoon.
The SAM has a full-time staff as well as volunteers who greet visitors and fulfill administrative functions, but when a new show opens, it's "all hands on deck." The cheerful group of volunteers and staff share duties to make the event fun, as well as successful.
