Technology
Update #1
Watching Episodes of The Quilt Show
We want to thank you for
having faith in our endeavor. Because of the internet, it truly is “A New Day” for
quilters worldwide.
As we approach April 2 there are a few important things we feel you need
to know. We have tried to do all our homework and gear up to be able
to provide you the video content you are expecting when you click to
Watch a Show. Between now and April 2, these newsletters will be providing
you with important updates to help you understand various web issues
that might arise during the launch.
Web content is delivered upon request – you click, and something
is supposed to happen. In a perfect world, this works flawlessly, but
the world of internet technology is constantly evolving. There are many
variables that contribute to making everything work as intended.
With professional guidance and assistance, we feel that we have prepared
our site with enough bandwidth and server power to enable you to watch
the shows. However, when a lot of people request content at the same
time, the bandwidth and servers can slow – or even clog. This is
not too different than plugging in too many irons at one time and tripping
a breaker (although it’s annoying, it’s fixable). During
the normal course of a regular day, we would not expect any problems
with the flow of video or other content. However, it is impossible to
know what will actually happen when all of our very enthusiastic members
try to access the show all at the same time on April 2. As an example,
this past Christmas Day, the Apple iTunes site (which can serve millions)
was totally shut down because so many people got iPods as gifts and then
went to download tunes.
If on April 2 you feel the site is running slow, please consider logging
on at non-high traffic times or even wait a day or two before attempting
to watch the show. If we have not properly estimated server strength
and bandwidth we will know it right away and will rectify it as quickly
as possible.
Rest assured that if a problem occurs, it will get worked out. We feel
it is important to let you know that, while we are making every effort
to avoid problems, there is the possibility of having slow or clogged
service on the first couple of days as we anticipate unusually high traffic.
Therefore, we ask that you will be understanding, patient, (and somewhat
appreciative) of this endeavor. It is truly cutting edge, very rare,
and as you can imagine, for us, a little scary. Our goal is to provide
you with outstanding shows, but until we cross into the realms of the
unknown, we won’t know exactly if we got it right. It has been
a blast watching your World Quilt Community grow and we are committed
to providing the most innovative and interactive quilt site in the world. – Alex,
Ricky, Justin, John – ARJJ CORP.
Time to Ask
The count down for taping our first episodes of
The Quilt Show is around the corner. On the shows, Alex and Ricky will
have opportunity to answer questions - to be exact, YOUR questions.
Between the two of them, they have a solid background in quilting and
want to help YOU! They can’t
promise they will get to all of them, and certainly not all of them
right away, but let the games begin by posting your questions and show
ideas on the February 27, Time to Ask Blog. We look forward to hearing
from you!
Visit Us Daily – Read the Daily Blog
It is understandable that members are joining because of the show, but in essence,
we have built for you the world’s first full-service interactive website
for quilters. We want each of you to start your day by logging on and reading
The Daily Blog. It only takes a minute and we always have show information, fun
stuff, and other interesting quilt news. Be the first to know – log on
and read The Daily Blog everyday. |

Three
New Services Now Available
Most of our site is user content
driven. That means YOU post the information. Three new services
are available at no extra charge to Star Members. If you are looking
for something that is not listed – it
was not posted – and it can only be posted by you – our
members.
1. Create a Shop Profile.
Shop owners and managers may list their
shop as an additional profile on their profile page. By listing your
shop, it is entered into the search database enabling quilters to
find you when they do a search – complete with a Mapquest link
for directions. Check it out by going to Search and then Find a Shop.
Your shop will remain posted as long as you are a member. Don’t
forget to upload a photo of your shop! Star members can try the shop
search now – click
here.
2. Create a Teacher Profile.
Quilt teachers
of all levels are urged to add the additional Teacher Profile so
that others seeking teachers can read about you. You can add your
website and tell your teaching radius as well as indicate what
topics are in your field of expertise. Don’t forget to upload a photo of yourself! Star members can
try the teacher search – click
here.
3. FINALLY! You can post YOUR Quilt Show.
This
is vital for creating a massive list of all shows around the world
so that those who are traveling can find out if there is a show
happening during their journey. WOW! Just click on Events and follow
the instructions! Don’t
forget to upload a show logo! Star members can try the search now – click
here
International Appeal
As you may know, the name of our site is The Quilt Show - getting the
name from the actual SHOW that will be posing in April. The term World
Quilt Community is YOU, our members, and we desire for the site to
have an honest to goodness world-wide appeal and membership. It is
very easy for us (Alex and Ricky) to think and express on a national
level, but quite another thing to think globally. So here's my first
appeal to our international members - What can we do on our end to
make this site more exciting for you?
It is important to reiterate that the actual content on the site is
user submitted. If our international members know of special events
or quilt activities in their country that should be promoted, then
please submit a press release by using the Contact link and selecting
Press Releases/News in the subject pull-down. Selected news stories
or events will be posted on the blog for us all to read. Personally,
I want to know what is going on in the UK, Ireland, Down Under and
Canada. I'd love to know about events in non-English speaking countries
too.
My second appeal is for our international members to take the lead
and help us with international member submitted content. Tell your
quilting friends about us. It is exciting to see the growth of this
site. We will continue to develop new site features and tweek those
that already exist in order to bring the entire quilting world the
richest, most valuable quilting web site on the planet. To reply to
these questions, please do so to the International Appeal Blog on February
24.

The Quilt Gallery
Currently
our community has about 1,500 quilts on line (very cool), and of
course we want more. When you are creating your quilt profile,
please use either your real name or at a minimum your screen name
as ‘maker’ or ‘quilter’ -
please do not use “self”. The profile enables members
to search, and ‘self’ does not constitute an effective
search heading. By using your real name or screen name this
makes it possible for Gold Star members to search effectively.
It seems logical to put ‘self’ on the profile page,
but it does not help the database for those who need to find
your quilts. We want this site to perform at its best for you!

Tell
a Friend!
March is the last month for individuals to join
as a Gold Star Charter Member at a 30% savings off the regular price.
After April 1, the opportunity to have your profile permanently labeled
with a Gold Star will forever be lost. If you are a Basic Member and
are enjoying the site – why
not upgrade today! Go to My Account – then Upgrade My Membership.
If you have not told all of your friends about the site – please
email them now and encourage them to get in on the ground floor of this
exciting opportunity. Yes, anyone can be a Star Member for $24.95 after
April 1, but only those who purchase Season 1 prior to April 1 will be
awarded their permanent gold membership star. This really is your World
Quilt Community and it is great watching it grow!
Help us spread the word! With less than a month away, we want ALL quilters
around the world to have the opportunity to become a Gold Star Charter
member. We appreciate EVERY member on our site, but want to make sure
that no rock is left unturned. If you would take a moment to email at
least 5 of your quilting buddies about this limited offer, we would truly
appreciate it.
