 | | paulaj Presents: Pearl of the Dragon Quilt #: 1017690 Added on 09/19/2010
I saw a photo of a dragon in a book years ago and saved it. I finally decided to enlarge it to incorporate it into a king size quilt I was making for my bed. The quilt also uses the "Strips and Curves" technique developed by Louisa Smith. The designs around the perimeter are Japanese family crests I adapted for applique. |

| April 04, 2013 | | | | kelleyc Presents: The Garden Club Quilt #: 1003110 Added on 05/19/2007
There are actually two quilts, each containing the handprint of my daughter and her preschool classmates. These were made as end-of-year presents for her teachers. They took WAY longer than I anticipated. Her class was called "The Garden Club" and so the handprints are all meant to be flowers in a garden. I started out with an idea based on a book by Marcia Layton, but then I saw the Simply Quilts episode with Lynette Jensen of Thimbleberries making a tablerunner with a picket fence, and thought that would look cute too. |

I saw a quilt in a magazine that had irregular sashings. I'm a very symmetrical person but for some reason the quilt called to me. I decided on a garden theme where either the blocks had garden type names or things of nature that could be found in the garden. Techniques needle turn applique, paper foundations piecing, 3d flying geese and hand quilting |

I pieced this top with a method similar to English paper piecing and thoroughly enjoyed the process. However, I learned a hard lesson: WHAT NOT TO DO WITH A BALLPOINT PEN. When I finished the quilt and washed it, the ink ran onto the white background. After I cried a little, my next thought was to hide the quilt. But then I decided that the quilt should not be punished because of my mistake, so here it is. I love it in spite of its flaws -- like a wayward child! I hope someone else learns from my sad experience. |

Quilt top hand pieced waiting for my children during their many activities. It’s my first hand pieced quilt and I loved how the time would fly by while I was sewing. I embroidered many bugs - flying and hiding. This quilt will always remind me of their carefree childhood years. Binding is fuzzy yarn with beads attached. Back is one big pieced hexagon flower. |
