We're Outta the Woods
Quilt #: 1019968   Added on 10/15/2011

Based on WIzard of Oz, design composition inspiration was posters of Alphonse Mucha and the 1930's movie, resulting in an almost cubist interpretation. I used my own cruder vesion of Joan Colvin's fabric collage technique for the trees and hand painted Dorothy and the corner figures. Also incorporates couched yarn, thread painting, confetti collage and machine applique. The background is semi-impressionistic/watercolor technique, using 1.5 inch finished size squares

Chinese Pandas
Quilt #: 1023448   Added on 09/10/2014

As I sat listening to news of the Earthquakes in China I felt inspired to draw a Panda pattern. Exploring photos of these seemingly, roly-poly animals was warm and fun – not at all like the awful situation in Asia. I ended up drawing both a vertical and horizontal panto.
I wanted the Vertical Panda-Bamboo” for my quilt. I was excited about piecing it on the long-arm machine. I put together the strips of bamboo leaves and the strips of lanterns, then “pieced” it all together on the machine. It was fun albeit a bit of a challenge.

Rift Valley
Quilt #: 1023026   Added on 04/08/2014

Although I live in the city, it is vast, open spaces of land that truly inspire me. Undeveloped and untouched land makes me think about how so much of our earth looked to earlier inhabitants. As time passes, and these vistas disappear, they seem even more precious. I like to imagine what people long before me felt when they first saw the same landscape. There are still some places on earth that can awaken that collective memory.

Windswept
Quilt #: 1023335   Added on 07/27/2014

After watching a news sequence of the balloon festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico I was inspired to create my own balloon festival. The balloons are hand painted using fabric paint on cotton fabric and fused and stitched onto the background. The sky and hills were painted separately and then stitched together. The weeds and grasses in the foreground were fused and then stitched using free motion stitching. The border is a commercial fabric. It was quilted on a domestic sewing machine.

Sedona Star
Quilt #: 1023422   Added on 08/28/2014

The Quilt Show Block of the Month 2012. I didn't start it until Jan. 2013, and I'm so glad that I started it and didn't let this one get away. I learned so much and enjoy every step of the construction process. Sara Vedeler's directions were so easy to follow! It gave me a chance to use my embroidery machine for something other than quilt labels. The 3rd place ribbon at the AQS Grand Rapids Quilt Show would not be possible without the outstanding quilting Sheri Zalar created and Sarah Vedeler for her wonderful design!
