Although I live in the city, it is vast, open spaces of land that truly inspire me. Undeveloped and untouched land makes me think about how so much of our earth looked to earlier inhabitants. As time passes, and these vistas disappear, they seem even more precious. I like to imagine what people long before me felt when they first saw the same landscape. There are still some places on earth that can awaken that collective memory.

After watching a news sequence of the balloon festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico I was inspired to create my own balloon festival. The balloons are hand painted using fabric paint on cotton fabric and fused and stitched onto the background. The sky and hills were painted separately and then stitched together. The weeds and grasses in the foreground were fused and then stitched using free motion stitching. The border is a commercial fabric. It was quilted on a domestic sewing machine.

The Quilt Show Block of the Month 2012. I didn't start it until Jan. 2013, and I'm so glad that I started it and didn't let this one get away. I learned so much and enjoy every step of the construction process. Sara Vedeler's directions were so easy to follow! It gave me a chance to use my embroidery machine for something other than quilt labels. The 3rd place ribbon at the AQS Grand Rapids Quilt Show would not be possible without the outstanding quilting Sheri Zalar created and Sarah Vedeler for her wonderful design!

The challenge was animals, mine was elephant. I cut the pattern as you would a folded snowflake. Pieced the red fabric randomly and cut. It was a fun design.

While enjoying Ann Fahl's class on Thread Painting in 2011, I was inspired to design, machine applique, machine thread embellish Glorious Columbines On My Mind using Ann's techniques. In 2014 I finally felt that my quilting skills would do it justice. Apparently The Plano, TX Quilt Guild thought so too. It won 2nd place in the Master Art Quilt category and I was thrilled.

I made this quilt from an old street photo taken in Wellington, New Zealand in August 1938. The quilt depicts my Father aged 4, holding hands with his Mother , together with his Aunt. I always loved the photo and enjoyed how it show that even as times change , family and what that means, stays the same.
