Deep Sea Mardi Gras
Quilt #: 1017687   Added on 09/19/2010

I designed and machine embroidered this quilt for my guild challenge, which was to use the Jane Sassaman red/yellow and purple/green gradated dot fabrics and beads. I appliqued/embroidered all the fish directly onto the unpieced background, using a number of Jane Sassaman fabrics that coordinated with the challenge fabrics. Then I sewed the border/binding to the back of the quilt and then machine appliqued to the front. Then I dressed up the fish for a party by applying over 1000 hot fix crystals and beads.

Created for the Challenge at the Quiltfest in Pigeon Forge with the subject "Occassions". Two fabrics given, one Gradations of primary colors and the check. The Face is hand painted with various techniques used to create the rest of the quilt. Those including free motion embroidery, trapunto, machine quilting and fabric painting. She won first place for the Challenge. I had very mixed emotions because it was a purchase award. I got very attached to her given that this was the first attempt I had made at painting a face. So now she hangs in the Welcome Center for the Tourist Department in Pigeon Forge, TN.

Inspiration came from Pfaff's Carnivale embroidery card. I especially liked the jester embroidery design (bottom right corner) and that sparked the idea for the trapunto mask and jester cap soft sculpture. The 3D mask was done using faux trapunto with water-soluble thread and decorated with hot-fix crystals. The background uses the traditional Mardi-Gras colors and the corners are decorated with doubloons.

Mardi Gras Carnival is an "Opportunity" quilt, a quilt designed and made by a group of quilters to raise money for our local guild, The Foothill Quilters. We were inspired by Rachel Wetzler's award winning quilt, Fandango. Many thanks to Rachel.

The best class I've ever taken was taught by Libby Lehman in which she taught us the ins and outs of making circles. Since that time I've been thinking about making a quilt like this tho I never found my roundtuit to design one so when I saw this kit I knew I had found the answer -- Libby's great design and Ricky's wonderful fabrics made this a fun quilt to make -- I got to decide which fabrics to put where and which fancy stitches to use so it is uniquely mine. THANKS LIBBY! AND RICKY!

Tree of Hands
Quilt #: 1022896   Added on 02/15/2014

This quilt was made by using a light box to copy the hands of kindergartner's and the machine appliqueing them to the backing fabric. The tree trunk is pieced and then appliqued. The quilt was made to auction for the school's annual gala fundraiser. I'm happy to say it raised $2500.00 for the school. The heart on the tree trunk is the school logo. The hands at the bottom are the teachers.

This little quilt is a wall hanging I designed and built for an on-line class for Academy of Quilting (.com). It's an off-shoot of a solar eclipse quilt I made with marbled fabric. Since it's almost impossible to teach hand marbling on line, I came up with this version done with fabric and Sharpie markers. What can I say, I love to doodle and this quilt really reflects that. The flames are made by scribbling on fabric with markers - hence the name for the class "Marker Mania."

This is a fun project from Susan Carlson's book, "Serendipity Quilts", using a glued fabric collage technique. It is a great way to play with value and colour and use up all those tiny left over scraps. The outside rays were foundation paper pieced and one has some Ricky Tims hand dyed fabric.
