This was the finished result of entering the Minnesota Quilters 2009 Quilt Challenge. This is the first time I ever did a challenge! The theme was St Cloud, Minn. I just tried whatever I felt would work. Used a photo for inspiration and soon the quilt became very 3-D along with use of vintage beads and lots of machine free form quilting! |

The Elizabeth II is a replica of the ship that brought the first colonists to America in 1587. Yes, it predates the Jamestown settlement. The Elizabeth II colonists established a settlement on Roanoke Island, NC. When a resupply ship returned to the colony in 1589, the colonists had vanished. It is known as the "Lost Colony". The locals here have a saying "don't ask a local for directions, we already lost one colony!". |

This quilt was made as part of a group quilt with Sub-Q Quilters. Each person made a complete quilt from a pool design Desiree Habicht adapted to a quilt section. Each person was instructed to do in their own style and add an element of their choice. Completely fused from hand dyed fabrics and enhanced with painting. My element was the Hummingbird. Bottom of the quilt has hand embroidered and beaded ferns. Stenciled spheres were also added to the top area of the quilt |

| February 17, 2013 | | | | kukana31 Presents: vivaldi a quilt in four seasons Quilt #: 1021778 Added on 02/04/2013
i was listening to Vivaldi...when i was looking at our guilds workshop page and i just kept being drawn into this leaf shape during class - i began work on the Autumn leaf...and my brain went nuts and i decided to expand it to the 4 seasons so when i finished i had pieces of all my batiks all over the house...what a mess to resort and clean up the machine stitching(about 1/8" apart) was done while listening to Vivaldi...think about the fast string movement and i used many shades of variegated thread lots of fun |

Part of my series of primarily one color quilts, the central medallion of The Learning Quilt was based on a friend's pewter necklace and the quilt grew from there. I learned more about: constructing a quilt with appliqué; silk, velveteen, and metallic coated fabrics; how to use hot fix crystals; the button stitch on my machine; and a little bit about how different threads look on different fabrics. |
