For our Hilton Head Island Celebration 350-30, the Camera Club and our Palmetto Quilt Guild teamed up to do a photo/quilt side-by-side exhibit. John Parsons' picture of the Marsh Tacky Cup Race on Hilton Head Island shows Molly ridden by Brittany Bowen flying, with all four feet off the ground, across the finish line - winning the 2011 Marsh Tacky Cup. In the photograph the spectators are blurred and it adds to the sense of speed. I printed the spectators onto fabric and used it in the quilt. The horse, rider and people are fused applique, the sky is paper pieced and the sand uses Karen Eckmeier's wave technique. All are densely quilted. I always loved the picture - now I enjoy seeing the quilt as part of our Celebration exhibit - Hilton Head Island; Flora, Fauna, Friends and Fun.

Created in response to a Mountain Art Quilters challenge, I attempted to blend the Art Noveau styles of Alphonse Mucha and Maxfield Parrish. It depicts an angel restoring her spirit by absorbing rays from heaven after helping troubled souls on earth. Approximately 180 fabric pieces were used to create the image.

I wanted to play with some of the design possibilities using mariner's compass blocks and this is my first attempt. I learned a lot with this project and enjoyed the whole process. I've decided I totally love bright yellow against a very dark purple. :)

I made this quilt for my Mom the year she was undergoing treatment for Leukemia. With the help of about 30 (?) volunteers from the internet, we made 180 paper-pieced cranes. Using a backing fabric with origami crane images, and outline quilting all of the cranes on the front, there are over 1000. The legend of the 1000 paper cranes dates back to a young girl exposed to radiation after the nuclear bombing of Japan in WWII, and she came down w/ Leukemia, so I thought it was right for my mom. All of the prayers that went into the piecing worked, she is in full remission.

A Baltimore Fancy
Quilt #: 1000231 Added on 01/03/2007
Our Walworth quilt group, Reverse Curves, used patterns adapted from Baltimore quilts along with some original designs. Baltimore Fancy was hand quilted in a one-inch grid. It was raffled at our quilt show to benefit the new local Ronald McDonald house. We raised over $7,000 - a donation larger than some corporate gifts that year. The quilt was won by a lady who hung it on the wall of her two-story staircase. A few years later, we were sad to find out that her roof leaked on the quilt. I still have the patterns and hope someday to duplicate it.
