Owner: Nancy Hayes

Made By: Nancy Hayes
Year Made: 2014 - Certain

Located In: Princeville, IL United States

Description Statement:
I saw a beautiful picture and got permission to reproduce it in fabric. This was done by creating my own pattern, then dyeing all of my fabrics (except the black). I then did raw edge applique, thread painting and quilting and added crystals for the stars.

The circles of illusion were pieced first. The quilt grew from a desire to push myself creatively and to leap outside my comfort zone.

Dr. Who revisited
Quilt #: 1022808   Added on 01/28/2014

I enjoyed watching Dr. Who when I was a little girl. My daughter continues the tradition and is a lover of the new Dr. Who series. No better way to represent the show than a quilt of the Tardis, his spaceship. In the small borders I quilted her favorite quotes from the show. For the panels she picked her favorite characters, Rose Tyler, Dr. 1 and 2, a Dalek and a Weeping Angel and I quilted a free motion sketch of each. It was finally finished on the same day she got her braces off!

Quilt #: 1022464   Added on 11/05/2013

The Dresden plate quilt and hexie flowers are English paper pieced, then appliqued to the background.
Hexagons are 1/4". The hand piecing took a couple of years because I had to let my hands rest for a couple of weeks between stitching all these tiny hexagons. There are approximately 800. Inspite of the tiny pieces, I really enjoyed making this quilt. It is approx. 18 x 22".

This is an improvisationally pieced modern quilt. Most of the fabric is scraps from my stash of Provençal fabric plus a background fabric purchased specially for this quilt. It was made to hang in the cottage.

Double Dare
Quilt #: 1022760   Added on 01/05/2014

I chose DARE as my touchstone word for 2014, then quilted my intention in this quilt. My first attempt at improvisationally piecing the letters was muddled, so I sliced it in half and used it in the background of the second effort, hence the name Double Dare.

My friend, Janet Stone, asked me to be a "stunt sewer" for her to test her patterns as she designed the TQS BOM for 2014. I agreed as long as I could use hand applique instead of machine. She also gave me permission to make changes. Quilted by Theresa Ward.

After The Storm
Quilt #: 1022762   Added on 01/07/2014

This quilt is made to commentate storms that affect Fl and Al. The whirling represents the tornadoes that hit Al. regularly, and the fabric and quilting represent Fl., which is prone to hurricanes. Each spike has a shell quilted into it and the rest of the quilt has palm trees, sailboats, seagulls, flamingos, both printed in the fabric and quilted. The flamingos have 5 mm black onyx beads for eyes to draw attention to them. The back of the quilt has frogs playing in the fabric to represent new life after the hurricane.
